FFXIV Fan Festival Tokyo 2019: Liveblog of the opening keynote

99
Throw wide the gates.

Here we are at long last. If you’re anything like me, you’ve been looking forward to this event since Final Fantasy XIV first delivered its opening keynote in Las Vegas last year. This is the last chance for the developers to get up on stage in front of fans and deliver the last big reveals about the Shadowbringers expansion, and if history is any indication, it’s going to be done with no small amount of panache.

As we did with the Paris fan festival, I’ll be right here liveblogging the address in the comments for those who aren’t watching, or for those who are watching and just enjoy the commentary. The newest updates will be near the top. So let’s all settle in and find out the heretofore unrevealed information as we explore… uh… wherever it is we’re exploring in Shadowbringers. That’s actually one of the pieces of information we don’t know yet.

So had some sleeps and some thoughts about the announcements and on the whole I am more positive than negative about what was announced.

I can understand why folks are upset about gender locking of races. It just seems a bit tone deaf from SE and very old fashioned of them when they seem to have made a lot of good progress previously. I hope that they may reconsider this at some point

That said I do like the look of the races shown especially the Hrothgar / Ronso and I am seriously considering using one of my fantasias when I have that option.

Will be fun to be a lion dancer and speaking of which dancer seems like it might be interesting. Though again I have a slight disappointment that its not a healer as I was hoping. It might have been the only way I would have considered healing in FFXIV still I like a range class too so not that disappointed.

The new locations looked stunning to me and again I look forward to having a good poke around when I am able. Given my rate of progress in the game I imagine I will get there once everyone is completely bored of it.

So for me some bad but a lot of good too. I am still looking forward to the expansion and all it is bringing to the game. Even if the all isn’t everything folks were hoping for it is still a lot of nice things.

The gender locking is stupid. I literally can’t roll my eyes any farther without going blind. It was stupid in FFXI. It was stupid in 1.0. It’s stupid now.

And of course it’s the usual “sexy ladies” and “hideous brutish men”.

I can see an argument for the sexy ladies. Sexy ladies are popular for people to play.

But hulking brute males aren’t popular to play. After the initial “new and shiny” effect wears off, Hrothgar will be as unpopular as Roegadyn. Possibly more unpopular.

For Dancer, I was initially pretty disappointed that it’s a ranged DPS. Ultimately I’m happy to have Dancer. It would have been a cool healer, but I have always wanted a class focused around thrown weapons and there aren’t very many in any games.

But man it sucks that there’s no new healer. I was really hoping for either Dancer or Chemist so we could get away from the “What flavor of White Mage do you want? Original flavor? White Mage with book? Yu-Gi-Oh White Mage?”

I was looking forward to the possibility of a healer that wasn’t just another slight variation of mage. A new aesthetic and style, even if it had the usual healer gameplay mechanically.

————————

Overall, I’m 75% disappointed. I’m sure I’ll still like the expansion. I’m sure I’ll love Dancer. But this is definitely no Heavensward already.

Side Note: Job changes are going to be extremely important after this I feel. Healers need a serious overhaul to breath some fresh life into them. If healer mains aren’t getting a new class for 6 years (assuming they even get one next expansion and it’s not just two more DPS), they need to throw them a bone with some really good improvements to the existing healers.

I don’t mind gender-locked races, so long as they don’t lock jobs. But the no new healer thing is where I feel for the healers on this.

That will place it at 11DPS / 4 Tanks / 3 Healers in terms of roles.

With Tanks and Healers having no way to differentiate, the same should be said for DPS. So the argument of “ranged DPS” is invalid, if that’s what they went with. It’s like saying DPS are more important than tanks and healers, and tanks are more important than healers because they got the golden ticket. Balanced should be centered on roles unless they come up with a way to differentiate tanks and healers and categorize them that way. Preferably a 50/25/25 split considering the light party system.

Other than that the full trailer was amazing enough to not have completely destroyed my hype. Though it went from a 15/10 to about a 7/10 by the end. Would have probably been 5/10 if I mained heals. Maybe tomorrow’s live letter, followed by the patch, then by May’s combat letter and events might bring that back up.

I recognise this isn’t a popular opinion, but gender-locking never really bothers me.

However hypocritical it may be since I have played as a Male Miquo’te since launch.

But the main reason I was so excited to play Miquo’te was because of the fact it wasn’t available in FFXIV’s Mithra race.

I mean, it’s not like we aren’t getting both a new male and female race and the male characters in the game already tend more towards the androgynous style already so the Hrothgar provide a second option for more bulky males outside of Roes.

But at the end of the day it seems the majority of fans would of preferred one race with both genders.

That copout for Male Viera is annoying. It’s literally the same excuse for why there were no Male Mithra in FFXI.

I don’t really care about playing a Male Viera myself, but genderlocking races… that’s so outdated. Especially when then you introduce a Khimari-esque race but then make it male-only, not giving a female option.

Also the models they showed off look god ugly for Hrothgar. Way too muscular, so they’ll look awkward and overly ridiculous as anything other than Paladin/Warrior/Death Knight. I hate how they finally got over the genderlock trash in FFXI, and yet… they then literally do what FFXI did by having a big beefy male-exclusive race and a slim/sexy female-exclusive race.

*sigh*

Oh well, Dancer might be interesting.

Welp… Yoshi, ya managed to do it. You got me less hyped for Shadowbringers, despite the otherwise fan-friggen-tastic full video.

The only plus I see out of the Hrothgar race is, if I wanted to, I could probably make Kimahri (FF10) if I REALLY wanted to do that. Otherwise, who bloody let a Miqote and a Roegadyn get together? Seriously? Because that is what they look like otherwise. And here I was, excited to get Viera and making myself a bunny guy…

Otherwise… hey, Dancer! I remember when I said there could be an argument of sorts back in Stormblood’s full video that our lil’ miss lady in red could be a Dancer class utilizing rings to fight… So… hey, partial credit on maybe being a bit right, just not at the time! Yay…? Sucks that we aren’t getting a healer… but then again, that may be for the best right now. I’d like to see them shore up the current crop and get them feeling good…

… Then again, I want to say the same about Machinist too.

I keep seeing this argument all over the forums and discord, but be honest, male viera is just miqote with bigger ears, that is IT no different, just another flavor of femboy but with larger ears and no tail.

Don’t make assumptions.

Viera From Final Fantasy XII Were Considered as Final Fantasy XIV’s New Race; Male Concept Revealed

There was already concept art of male Viera considering they were a possibility since Heavensward. That specifically was something I was interested in playing. That isn’t ‘femboy’.
Also, this isn’t the first time Square has gotten blowback for gender-locked races either considering Roegadyn were locked to males only and Miqote were female only during 1.X.

Do you think there is any chance they are trolling us? If they were to announce no genderlocking, and a hammer wielding healer latter this weekend, that would generate a lot of buzz. Too much to hope for?

I hope so. Genderlocked races is pretty fucking dumb regardless of any idiotic lore excuses – it’s a video game, not a fucking book or movie.
