One Shots: Avoid these vacation destinations

When you’re planning your summer MMO vacation, there will be a lot of places bidding for your time and gold. But not every resort is vengeful spirit-free, and not every tourist trap promises that you’ll come back with all of your limbs.

To help you avoid the worst places in games, our readers scouted out some vacation destinations that you’re really going to want to skip in 2020, such as any time you see a haunted church sinking in to the ground.

“In Fallout 76’s drowned church with a dramatic story you find out if you take the time to read the scattered lore,” said Lethia. “It’s horrible and it’s a cursed place to stay away from — although it’s very pretty.”

Josh shows the aftermath of a poorly planned holiday in what I think is Black Desert: “Considering the Red Paladin reception my Dark Knight received outside of Tarif, I feel like it’s likely not the greatest of tourist destinations.”

“There is something so much fun about roaming around old places in World of Warcraft — Suramar to be exact! — hoping to find treasure and adventure but then looking up and seeing a giant spider looking down at you! Ewwww!” said Toy Clown in the ichor-soaked diary pages left behind.

And if you think that Star Wars single-biome planets are nothing but exciting adventures, you may want to give this autumnal-themed world a skip.

Iron Salamander reports: “In Star Wars: The Old Republic, Voss is pretty nice to spend your vacation at if you hang around the main hub. In the wilderness? Not so much.”

Now that we’re all having flashbacks to our worst vacations ever, Minimalistway takes us to a more sophisticated place full of rumination and loogies.

“This random moment, I’ll admit, reminds me of my childhood. I did that on a pedestrian bridge once. I hit one car before running away.”

I guess I’m not the only one who takes screenshots of interesting NPC quotes and conversations. If you’ve captured some pictures of characters saying something interesting, funny, or significant, share it for this week’s screenshot challenge. Or you could just dazzle us with your best pics!

Every week, One Shots shines a spotlight on the best community screenshots from your MMO adventures. If you have a great pic to share, email it to justin@massivelyop.com with the subject “One Shots.” Make sure that the picture is over 880px wide and comes with a description or story!

FFXIV has made me laugh out loud (“LOL” for you kids out there) on a great many occasions; a couple of examples:

1) Alphinaud channeling Patrick Stewart in the post-ARR storyline was inevitable given his massive ego at the time;
2) The Machinist Job quests introduce us to a sweet girl with a… “darker” side; this quote had me doing a double-take…
3) I don’t even remember where this last shot was taken, or even what it’s about… it’s just a random quote from a background NPC, but it shows what fun you can find by keeping your eyes open out in the game world…

It’s by no means a good screenshot, but this line outside the glittering high elven city of Shimmerene (from an extradimensional crystal skull being I was carrying in a bag) was so unexpected I slapped the screenshot key.

The Augur of the Obscure has been an entertaining jerkass companion on the ESO Psijic Order quest line…

Some screens from my recent forays into the Appalachia of Fallout 76 …

1) My character’s face — included here because it’s kinda random how he looks almost normal, instead of like some sort of vaguely-criminal weirdo, like a lot of the default faces.

2) This little cat was sitting in a window crying, in the way cats do, for her humans’ attention. I didn’t have the heart to tell her they were all dead, and the game wouldn’t let me take her with me. Geez, Bethesda, why you gotta be so cold? :-)

3) On a lighter note, there was this tea shop shaped like a giant teapot — just in case you were really, really thirsty …

4) My character asleep in his so-called “camp”. Notice the lack of walls, doors, or defenses? Yeah, Appalachia is beautiful, but being eaten by a super-mutant monster while you sleep? Not so much. :-)

Lastly, I felt compelled to link this video by YouTuber Caleb. Like most of us, he’s noticed how NPC minions in computer games are typically way braver than they ought to be … (LINK) :-D

Enjoy!

Thank you very much for the feature, being new here i feel very welcomed :) Oh gosh this week’s theme is…really something special for me. If i am to select just one from Secret World Legends it would be this one, even if that game is full of poetry in motion.

And this made me laugh. A lot of the dialogue in TSW is too close to the bone now:

When playing through Path of Fire I can’t help but think of the song Darude Sandstorm.

Why thank you! /bows

And sorry for no NPC lines though. I just like showing characters in the moment without text to give it away or bombing the scene. Hence, none of my shots really have ’em…

…well, accept for this one! o.O
