Star Citizen marks its eighth birthday with alpha 3.11’s release, free goodies, and Halloween events

28

This coming Saturday, October 10th, will mark the eighth anniversary of Star Citizen’s reveal to the public, which in CIG terms is the game’s official birthday, and that means it’s time to celebrate.

One of the biggest party pieces of the celebration is the launch of alpha 3.11 after a brief stint in open PTU testing. The update, called High Impact, introduces several new weapons, the first opening of cargo decks, three new Origin 100 starter ships, force reactions, and the removal of armistice zones around space ports; get ready to be more easily trolled by folks while trying to land, though turrets and security forces are being added to high traffic zones.

In order to mark the eighth birthday of Star Citizen, players are being handed a number of free items including a unique helmet and suit, an iridescent pistol, and a birthday edition of Pico the Penguin. There will also be other goings-on including a birthday AMA on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. EDT and a letter from Chris Roberts to the community that same day.

Finally, there’s some Halloween shenanigans with three freaky-looking helmets — two of which can be earned exclusively in-game — as well as the return of the annual pumpkin carving contest and a thematic skin for purchase for the Drake Cutlass.

To call this a celebration of an anniversary is really an abuse of how the word anniversary is used in this genre. An anniversary happens when a game marks a milestone AFTER release. We have enough confusing, mashed up terminology in our lives today. Don’t make it worse by calling time in alpha an anniversary…
That’s just ridiculous.

The word anniversary is not linked to a birthday but to a celebration made at precise date. It can be literally anything including Alpha and is absolutely not link to a special milestone like a release.

You complain about having “enough confusing, mashed up terminology in our lives today” and make it even more confusing by linking words which have no connection.
Citizencon is an anniversary, a celebration for all backers. If you don’t want to celebrate, just don’t.

I felt the same as many. How can a game be in alpha for 8 years? Now that I bought a basic package and have been in the game, I get it. Yes it’s “alpha,” but anyone can play. Yes it’s “alpha,” but a huge project that is being built around it’s player base and we get to see the vision grow. Fact is this game will never be “done” as it’s meant to grow with the player base. So I stopped thinking about it as just another game or mmo or fps or sandbox. They really are trying to redefine the idea of computer gaming. I don’t mind spending the $45 to have a seat in this.

Those scamps at Star Citizen eh! You have to hand it to them they are celebrating their failure to get not one but two projects even close to release after 8 years.

Remember the days when the fanboy’s said how ridiculous it was if anyone dared to suggest that Star Citizen wouldn’t release before 2020.

These days it doesn’t sound that far fetched that it wont release before 2025.

Not many white knights left now in these forums these days , I can think of only one who shows up regularly to defend it when three years ago there used to be many.

LOL. Roger you should have another look at threads. Beside the same well know refundian spreading their usual, “I told you so” ther is not much to say. The all story is about SQ42 and saying it will not be done before 2025 is like crying scam, never or “90 days top for sure”.

The single remaining core tech required for SQ42 is icache coming next year. +600 devs working every day, with better pipelines allowing more productivity for bohe SQ42 and SC

What will happen by end of next year for gamer community? ED space legs? Cool so what. More remaster of past old Publishers game? Great…

By end of next year, naysayers will keep throwing their prophecies, turning every single bit of information as negative… and SC will get 5 more patch adding core tech to deliver more gameplay, with no competitor, unless flying a ship in space from A to B is considered competition… The gap between others option is increasing at every quarter… all for less than a Triple-A released as polished. At the end, more choice for the gamer community :)

Roberts has been on their forums talking up their new quarterly show to relay progress for Squadron 42, and said they’re still a ways out from beta. In case anyone needed a better indication that they’re no where near done on this train wreck. The game that’s always two years away from release.

Letter From the Chairman
The game that don’t compromise to offer 9 hours of solo + 5 vs 5 Star Wars ships for just 40$ vs 45$.
Because gamer can enjoy both while not losing perspective of what they got for their $…

Can you have a “birthday” before you’re born?

This is the first major patch that I’ve had zero interest in checking out. It’s pretty minor, all things considered.

8 years….of “alpha”. Holy cow that’s a long time to sit in alpha phase. By the time this game is fully released its going to look super out dated. But looks like they had time for spooky updates haha. This is a huge rolling cash grab. Yikes. I remember when dayz got hell for being in alpha for like 3-4 years or something? Somewhere around there but this game has been going on 8? I honestly don’t know what to say past this… except my condolences for the people who bought it. I’ve been burned on a few games too if it makes you feel any better….but luckily not this one.

If you don’t know what to say, start to put date, resources and scope in perspective since end of kickstarter.
Current SC Alpha have more features packed than any single Triple-A released.

Condolences for those expecting anything from Publishers at this point :)

No but internet allow anyone to say anything so let’s pretend it makes sense… when 30K individual players do log in every day and 1 million backers have joined and keep joining.
A legend is born: Joe’s magic hand forcing individual to join an Alpha game and to buy its 300M$ fleet :)

I do like the new suit (seen here with TruFlex arm and leg pads).

They added some new faces so I need to keep tweaking Hikari’s new look a bit.

Love the changes to Everus, which serves as our de facto base of operations most of the time.

Can I point out that warframe is having a free engine update and is coming “close” now to looking like star citizen. For free. Let that sink in, how outdated this game will be by the time it actually has a full release. Go check it out. From what I read you can even mess with it now. They did a big update to their engine. For….FREE and out of nowhere with them already making plans for ps5 graphical updates.

I pointed out what I liked about the update and shared some pictures, which I do often here.

Everything you said was not relevant to that. Thanks.

Can we add a little truth to your point? The engine upgrade in warframe was not done “for free”. It’s like “free healthcare” or “free college”. Someone has to pay for it. In the case of the latter it’s the tax payers. In the former it’s the people that actually spend money in the cash shop. I promise you the warframe dev team does not work for free nor are they cheap. They do not put in 40+ hour weeks into warframe out of charity so you can enjoy the fruits of their labor without compensation. Now you yourself may be one of the freeloading mooches that doesn’t pay a dime while you expect everyone else to carry the load, but that work did not come free.

Point two is that nothing stops the SC team from upgrading their engine. They did a massive upgrade on it already to bring it up to 64-bit from 32-bit which is no small feat. That’s historical fact not opinion. They did it once, they can do it again.

Now… Whether they can do it before I die and have to will my account my children or perhaps grandchildren remains to be seen. I am not defending SCs dev timelines at all. I just despise the FTP model and you happen to land squarely on that nerve.

You have one single valid point: do play whatever you want beside supporting SQ42+SC… don’t be shy you can add ED, EVE, NMS.

Still all of them are not close to what SQ42+SC will/do offer.
