Star Citizen provides a close look at the interior of the Idris capital ship

Last weekend, Star Citizen challenged its players to wrest control of an Idris capital ship from developers in a special in-game event, which was ostensibly about showing off the ship’s new interior. However, it was probably hard for most players to really take in the scenery when they were focused on gunning down people in-game aboard the craft, so that means this weekend’s Inside Star Citizen video will probably be a special treat since it tours fans through the Idris’ interior without having to worry about all of that pesky FPS gunfire.

The preview of the massive craft’s current interior build goes through several portions, starting from the rear hangar area, through ATC, along engineering decks, through crew quarters, and briefly through some portions of the bridge. Not every portion of the interior has been completed yet – namely the missile room – but it appears to be almost fully built out, with an eye on making the interior flow in both a crewmember perspective and as an FPS space, particularly since a large part of Squadron 42’s narrative will feature the craft.

As one might suspect, the Idris isn’t ready to be fully released to the persistent universe portion of SC yet, and the devs give no timetable about when it will be finished, but for those who are devotees of CIG’s evergreen alpha project, this look is easily the most complete yet of the capital cruiser.

Longtime MMORPG gamers will know that Star Citizen was originally Kickstarted for over $2M back in 2012 with a planned launch for 2014. As of 2024, it still lingers in an incomplete but playable alpha, having raised over $650M from gamers over years of continuing crowdfunding and sales of in-game ships and other assets. It is currently the highest-crowdfunded video game ever and has endured both indefatigable loyalty from advocates and immense skepticism from critics. A co-developed single-player title, Squadron 42, has also been repeatedly delayed.
