It’s launch day for multiplayer OARPG Wayfinder, which means it’s patch day too for this game that’s come such a long way over the last year.
Readers will recall that Wayfinder originally hit early access on PC, and then was hit with a nasty whammy: Its then-publisher, Digital Extremes, abruptly closed down its external publishing outfit, setting Wayfinder adrift and leaving it to studio Airship Syndicate to sail on alone. And sail on it has over the last year, with rollouts to both PC and console; the game has even downgraded into a multiplayer-optional format that may have disappointed MMO fans but at least injected some security into the game’s future.
Today, the game finally ends early access for a formal launch on PC and PS5. (The Xbox launch is later this month.) The buy-to-play launch update includes the new Wayfinder the studio revealed over the weekend, Lora, as well as the new Crucible open-world zone and the revamped echoes system.
“Wayfinder now supports cross-play across all platforms, allowing players to share gameplay lobbies across PC, PlayStation, and soon Xbox. Whether you’re playing solo or co-op, you can pick up your progress and continue your adventure across any platform,” Airship says. “Additionally, huge performance optimizations across low end machines, and Steam Deck make the Wayfinder experience the best it has been.”
Steam counts are still low so far on this Monday morning, but Airship has to be happy about that “very positive” recent review mix.
