MassivelyOP’s Weirdest MMO Stories of 2023: Weirdest thing MMO gamers did to win a forum argument (yes, again)

We’re continuing our traditional countdown of MassivelyOP’s weirdest MMORPG stories of the year!

Coming in at #3 on our list is…

Leaking more military secrets

For the last couple of years, we’ve been covering the War Thunder community’s penchant for accidentally leaking military secrets while trying to one-up each other’s knowledge about the real-world military gear and vehicles on which the game is based. The first couple of times it was funny, but now it’s happened so many times we’ve given up counting. Of course it’s rarely truly serious stuff – which you could probably have inferred based on the fact that nobody had been arrested for any of it.

Until this year, anyway, when a Massachusetts Air National Guard member was caught leaking documents relating to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in right-wing conspiracy theory Discord server; investigations eventually revealed that they’d originated from (where else) a War Thunder Discord server. If this were a movie, we’d say the plot was too pat.

Stay tuned for another weird story tomorrow, and don’t forget to check out our annual MMORPG awards and our Golden Yachties!
