Kickstarted MMORPG-turned-TCG Genfanad gives up, will sunset April 30

ArcheAge isn’t the only MMORPG announcing a sunset this week: Kickstarter success Genfanad is apparently closing its doors too.

Genfanad is a browser-based nostalgia-driven indie MMO that was first announced back in 2021 and actually pulled in just under $20,000 on Kickstarter. Developer Rose Tinted Games launched the title in 2022, but it never pulled over 2500 players. Last summer, the devs announced they were going to abandon the MMORPG model for a do-over as a TCG deckbuilder, which was obviously not the thing anyone Kickstarted.

In any case, it’s all over now, and Rose Tinted Games has announced the end of production of any version of the game, telling players that “the continuous development” is “no longer financially viable” between the Kickstarter and self-funding.

“Whilst we’ve tried to morph Genfanad into a title that we’d be happier with, the feedback we’ve gotten on this change has been clear that we would not be able to launch a game to the standards that we would like,” the devs write. “We will be closing down our Patreon & Steam page as of this message. We will also be closing down the Genfanad Beta servers on April 30th, giving Patrons a few more days to play.”
