Hi-Rez Studios felt bad about abandoning Tribes: Ascend

Do it anyway, but feel bad about it.

Letting Tribes: Ascend lie untouched for a long while was a smart business decision for Hi-Rez Studios, but it wasn’t one that the developers were happy about making. Studio president Stewart Chisam said that the decision was one made purely from financial necessity, and no one in the development teams liked leaving the title where it was. The success of SMITE frees up enough money that the game can be patched and developed again.

Chisam also stated that there’s no intention or expectation that the game will suddenly become profitable again; the hope is simply that the game can remain as a passion project for the studio. More patches are expected for the game in the coming months, so players and fans who had given up hope of ever seeing forward movement on the title still have plenty of reason to be happy about the game’s future. The game’s next patch is available for testing now.

Quinnocent I totally agree with a lot of what you said. I was a “Starsiege: Tribes” fanatic as well. I must have played that game close to every day for years. When Tribes 2 came out, you could feel  – in the game – that the developer was struggling. T2 could have been much better if the original developers were left alone to do it right. But like you said, the Tribes franchise was a niche and didn’t see much in sales. Hi-Rez Studios said themselves that even though they’re working on a patch, they’re not going to make any money. Personally, I think the release of the game being F2P (which in turn ended up feeling like P2W), caused even the people who loved the franchise to leave the game. That was their first big mistake. The second mistake they made was following Vengence in trying to make it an eSports game. Sure, Tribes 1 and 2 felt competative, but it wasn’t eSports competative, it was war competative, and H-Rez took the feeling or war out of the game. No one will every bring back the essence of Starsiege: Tribes unless they go back and play it and try to understand what made it so great. I loved bombing runs, I loved trucking a bunch of players over to attack at once, I loved the ELF gun!, I loved the huge structures that you could stake out in and lay down mines, I loved controlling the other faction’s generators, I loved last man standing (and watch the last 2 players), I loved how long it took to get into the other faction’s base, I loved having to learn how to ski and ski jump (rather than it being a big game feature), etc, etc. There were such a huge collection of subtle things that weren’t executed correctly in the games that followed. If a reputable game studio launched a kiskstarter to do a Starsiege: Tribes remake (maybe hiding behind a different name) using current technology, I’d be the first one in line to give them my money.

Tribes is part of the Starsiege universe, if you’ve ever heard of that.  There’s definitely a story there.  If I had to give you a very rough analogy, think Mechwarrior’s clan warfare and interplanetary conquest, except with elite jetpack-wearing soldiers instead of mechs.  And there was a Tribes game which had a single player component, Tribes: Vengeance.  If you want to see the story in a video game, that’s the game to try, if you can even still find a copy.

Most of the franchise’s longtime fans hated T:V, and it shut down its multiplayer servers only months in, due to lack of demand.  Most of the Tribes vets tried it and went back to T2.  So yes, Tribes has a story.  The hardcore players just don’t care about it.  And it’s not in T:A, for that reason.  Most of the players didn’t really want it.

Hi.  Typical frothing-at-the-mouth Tribes fanatic checking in.  You might be wondering how we feel!
Disappointed?  Yeah.  Angry to hear they “felt bad”?  Yeah.  But ultimately?  Used to it.
Tribes: Ascend never died, not by our definition of death.  Tribes has “died’ before, most of those deaths worse than this, and most of us have stuck around each time.
Tribes has always been The Little Franchise That Could.  First we had Tribes 1.  It was a fairly niche title, but it was really the only installment without serious development issues.
Then we had Tribes 2, a title launched shortly before its developer, Dynamix, shut down.  We played it anyway, albeit in its badly bugged original state.  Then Tribes 2 had its second coming with the Classic patch, when Garage Games stepped in to fix it up a bit.  The era that followed was arguably the peak of competitive Tribes play.
Tribes: Vengeance came and went.  I can’t speak to the quality of the single player campaign.  I barely played that part of the game, and most of the other Tribes vets I talked to never played past the first mission.  But the engine was critically flawed in multiplayer.  For a game which operates at ludicrous speeds, which only really shines at the top tier, impossible-seeming levels of skill, an engine prone to nonregs and other hit detection issues at high speeds was kinda a nonstarter.  And just about everything else was problematic too.  The grappling hook was kinda fun, though, albeit buggy and jerky fun that the engine again couldn’t properly support.
So we just went back to Tribes 2.  While Tribes 2 soldiered on for many years with its small community, T:V entirely collapsed within a few short months.  That should tell you just how flawed it was, at least as a Tribes title.
We gave up.  But in our darkest hour came Tribes: Ascend.  Our savior.  New visuals.  New, quality maps.  New and interesting weapons.  And an engine which could handle the speed which Tribes should operate at.  It was Tribes–real Tribes–a current generation successor which captured both the look and feel of the original games.  We only got a year of support, but y’know what?  Tribes 2 lost support faster than that, and in that case, the studio actually shut down, so we had zero hope of future patches.  And we played anyway.  This wasn’t really bad compared to that.
So yeah.  I’ll take this patch and like it, just like I liked the rest of the game.  I don’t really like Hi-Rez (I might have said I hated them, in the past!) for their abysmal track record with supporting older titles, but I’ll say that I like the work that they /have/ done on T:A.

PizzaDoh Nordavind Thanks. I saw a machinima video/game play with voice over, and it ended with one team capturing the enemy flag, so I pretty much assumed as much.

I like CtF as such as much as the next guy, but I have Halo and Battlefield for that.

The F2P model for a competitive fps was a bad move. It makes no logical sense. Just make a game with the same feel as Tribes 1 and 2 and sell it as a triple A online FPS. Turning Tribes into an eSports game is not what Tribes fans wanted.

Nordavind The franchise is set in the Earthsiege universe so there’s plenty of lore and background but the tribes games themselves are pure arena shooters (except tribes vengeance which did have a story mode).
