According to a series of Reddit posts from Destiny leaker AnonTheNine, Bungie has already begun development on Destiny 3, and if the leaks are to be believed, the next installment of the sci-fi shooter series will be considerably more hardcore, with a greater focus on the game’s RPG elements: “Just know that D3 will be even more ‘hardcore-y’ than Forsaken. And finally they’re going to push the RPG side of the game,” AnonTheNine writes. According to another post, Chris Barrett is heading up the project as game director with “Luke Smith still there in a big role.”
The noteworthy leaker also posted a thread to /r/DestinyTheGame entitled “Can’t wait,” which contained nothing but a link to an image of Europa, suggesting that the smallest of Jupiter’s moons will be among Guardians’ destinations in Destiny 3. Other leaks regarding the potential new installment include a claim that the game will include open-world PvPvE areas similar to The Division’s Dark Zone, though AnonTheNine clarifies that players should “Think more about it like fight for a territory, where PvP [is] there for a reason and not for griefing the heck out of people.”
As with any leak, especially one that can’t be corroborated by multiple sources, all of these rumors should be taken with a grain of salt, but AnonTheNine’s track record is pretty solid, with numerous successful predictions regarding the new locations and subclasses in the recently released Forsaken expansion for Destiny 2, among others. For now, though, we’ll just have to wait and see, but in the meantime, let the rampant speculation begin!
