Betawatch: New World shuts its testing doors for mysterious changes

Wait, where's my axe?! COME ON

This is probably fine: Amazon’s New World will soon move from its test state of “everyone in the test can play whenever” to “no one plays at all, test shut down, we promise something new and good is coming soon.” So either there are actual cool new features on the way or… this is very bad news. Anyone got a coin? While you flip that, check out some other coin-adjacent news from around the MMO betasphere, as it were.

Gosh, that got a little dismal. Maybe the list of games in testing below will cheer you up? Or maybe you’re not sad at all, in which case you’ll probably continue feeling fine if and when you inform us about anything we missed, like changing beta status or whatever. Hopefully you’re still feeling perky, you deserve it!

As always, we consider an MMO to be in open testing if it features free, public signups and will server wipe prior to launch. An MMO is marked in closed testing if it’s running a private test phase that cannot freely be accessed by the general public; it’s usually under NDA as well. Early access and crowdfunded MMOs whose tests we deem legitimate will be included. So-called “open beta” soft-launch MMOs with cash shops, no sign of launch in the west, or limited interest for our readers will not be listed; we also do not list expansions, with occasional exceptions.

AdventureQuest 3D: Open beta

After seeing what new world was I fear for Crowfall, I lost interest in a few days of new world.

Tax dodgers Amazon has already created a new world. It’s full of towns with high streets with no shops on them.

If there wasn’t a strict NDA for New World, which it has in place because it’s a real alpha not the PR/Early Sales Grab version we’ve all gotten used to, you’d know the answer to your question. All I’m going to say is M:OP readers are probably going to be quite pleased when they do find out.

Amazon discovered that hardcore PvPers are not the growth market you want to stake your first big gaming venture on?

You have to give Amazon props for shutting it down when they realized it needed serious revision.

PVP not my thing but i did log in a few hours, and it seems like they are putting a huge effort into this game and they do have many many people play testing it. I cant imagine it will not be a thing.

I hope they change it so you can build outside of group settlements and be able to lone wolf it or with just a couple of friends.

I really, really didn’t like the building mechanics in this game. I don’t like them in… what is it… Rend? either.

The whole ‘community building’ deal is fine, except people are tremendous dickbags, and being able to do my own thing on my own server, or choose a server with people I like to play with, is incredibly important to me.

Even FO76 has better building, mechanically speaking, with its weird portable CAMP situation. I’d rather have something where I can build myself a little homestead and pay to move it than just… only be able to build in Guild Spots, with fights over Guild Spots by Guilds Only, and freelancers essentially get shit (and shoved in it).

Dug From The Earth

Maybe they are abandoning the boring, washed out survival game, and going with an actual mmoRPG?

The current version is fairly shallow and boring. Will be interesting to see what comes down the pipe.

Maybe New World is switching over to Cry Engine. Then Amazon can sue itself for breach of contract. :)
