Game pad support is present now in the World of Warcraft: Shadowlands alpha

Not riding a dinosaur.

Yes, you can now play World of Warcraft with a gamepad… well, if you are currently in the game’s alpha test for the Shadowlands expansion, anyhow. If you’re still just playing Battle for Azeroth you’ll have to keep waiting. But the gamepad support is live in the expansion’s current alpha build, and you can even check out someone playing the game with a controller in a video just below. The dream has come true.

Of course, it’s important to note that this doesn’t indicate the game is heading for any sort of console release; this is meant to support people who either need the use of a gamepad as an input device or just those who would prefer a different way of enjoying the game. Still, if you’ve long thought that you’d rather be able to play the game with shoulder buttons and analog sticks, the option will soon be there.

I find this kind of sad.

Playing with a custom game controller for folks that are challenged playing with Keyboard/Mouse is one thing. Dumbing down your game such that it can be effectively played with a bog standard game pad is quite another.

Not EVERY game has to be available for this sort of simplistic play.

That being said, can a controller REALLY be used to effectively play WoW beyond the simplest of tasks? I really cannot see a controller being used for even older raids, such as Naxx. And if not, then why even bother pretending to support it?

Just my 2c on it.

Two points.

Firstly, it looks like you haven’t played Final Fantasy XIV, which has full controller support and just as many, if not more, buttons to press and that game is much more difficult imo. Secondly, it’s not ‘dumbing it down’ its giving players who can’t play with keyboard and mouse a chance to enjoy the game too, or simply players who don’t like keyboard and mouse, don’t be so insensitive.

WoW is a decade late with this feature.

WoW could be played to raid level with a controller even before the devs started putting in native support. You should try being a little more open minded to what folks can do when they set their mind to do something and put in the practice.

Friend you may want to take a seat, a deep breath and maybe a calming mug of whatever works.

World of Warcraft gameplay is about as dumbed down as its ever been. The scary controller is not the casuals coming to ruin the most hardcore ‘hit ability A to put dot, spam B to proc C’ gameplay evar.

In modern WoW if your not pushing Heroic or Mythic you absolutely don’t need a keyboard. You probably only need 9-12 inputs to do most spec rotations at the simplest level. Most specs don’t use target aoe spells in a raid. The complexity of the class kits really only happens in the hardest content, and even modern raids (which have so much more going on then Classic) really only ask you to move at the right times and dps the right add.

Will you be able to get max output on a class like druid? No way. This for people with disability or just want a controller to do quests and dungeons with friends.

Also the game is in its most difficult state. Even the eternal rng grind for optimal gear is harder now then the history of the game. No dumbing down here.

I played most of Legion with a Steam controller but the touchpads were essential especially for healing classes. FF14 launched with controller support but then I can go and make a cup of tea during the GCD of that game. :D

I hope this leads to mods like ConsolePort feeling a bit less janky and less like a mod. Also, if the basic functionality gets implemented well enough it would be very easy to justify porting to consoles when you think about how much money they are missing out on which FF14 gets to profit from.

I know they are only committing to this as an accessibility option, but I hope they can make the console ports work.
