The Daily Grind: If a different studio could remake your favorite MMO, which one would you pick?

MOP reader Bruno recently tweeted me a topic so great I begged him to let me pitch it to all of you. He was discussing how EverQuest II is underappreciated and deserved some love – or even a remake from a new studio. His pick to remake EverQuest II? Guild Wars 2’s ArenaNet.

I’m sure there are EQII and GW2 players out there making faces at their screen right now, but I love the idea. I’d love to see all the good stuff SOE poured into EQII, brought up to modern aesthetics and narrative style, with more open content and a flat-leveling curve that ArenaNet does so well.

If a different studio could remake your favorite MMO (or any MMO you think deserves a remake), which studio and which MMO would you pick?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

I’d like the original Trion/RIFT studio to handle Sea of Thieves and make it more of an MMO with a larger world/open groups/crazy events.

Sorry, I don’t have any faith in MMO studios anymore. They are more interested in sucking money out of the player than anything else. And ArenaNet taking over EQ2 sounds like a nightmare to me. I would have more faith in rogue servers today than any AAA studio. Look what the guys at Homecoming have done for COH or the guys at Net7 running Earth & Beyond.

Mind if i ask you why?

I would have more faith in rogue servers today than any AAA studio.

Most pserver staff are not developers nor are they designers. Expecting them to output content for old games, in a reasonable timeframe is a bit too much.

The solution for bad AAA management is not to change hands and keep them still being bad ( which happens also in crowdfunding or pservers, which are sketchy by nature ). The solution is to start monitoring how these companies act and behave, and pressure them with your wallet and by fighting for laws to impede them to pull up shit that other companies in other industries can’t.

For me, I just haven’t been happy with GW2 direction. I was sold on the original idea of the game at launch. And as an old classic MMO player, I have not been happy with all the streamlining of skills and love all my hotbars of abilities for EQ2.
The two rogue servers I mentioned are really doing great work and the people running them have a real passion for the games. The E&B server was created from just videos and screenshots and a little help from the original devs. They managed to even add the classes and star systems that EA left out of the game.

I don’t have particular faith in any studio over another. Maybe some have individuals whom I value more, but then again one or two persons even in leading positions only control so much, and definitely visionaries in charge does not mean their vision will transfer to the result.
Also for example even if I have great respect for what Larian studios did with the Divinity series and probably will repeat with Baldurs Gate III, there is no guarantee that will translate into making a good mmorpg or other genre; it doesn’t even guarantee that they can keep making great rpgs, just look at Bioware as an example, or dare I say Blizzard?.

But for speculation, I think if Vanguard had been sold to a company other than SoE then it would have had a different history. This is based on the idea that SoE had a competing product they were already investing heavily in (Eq2), so why invest in another product that essentially would become competitor for the same player base.
That means it is probably more about the investment. What kind of investment and what expectations the funding comes with, because that will define the outcome very much; regardless of which studio is making the game.

Hence why my opinion is more important than theirs :D

Jokes aside, when i thought of this remake, i was also thinking about how their main MMO, GW2 is configured from the bottom-up. I find that EQ2 would benefit from some design changes that move towards GW2.

Fashion, the heart system, the way maps are designed, a pruning of abilities, all of these are things that i feel GW2 does ok-ish, and if Anet got their hands on EQ2, they would be able to balance the things better between an oldschool MMO full of content, and over-needlessly complex gameplay.

Also, i would just love to see EQ2 having GW2 graphics.

This is not my favourite MMO and I enjoy it but I think it could be so much better. I’d like to see Blizzard remake DDO. Sorry for all that love DDO.

I’d have it remade by the MOP community studio. Why with all the armchair experts I see on the forums here it’s sure to be a success!

I thought this would be a decent company as well, but despite the fact that I love some of the things they have done such as the level-less areas and even how they handle story, their overall quests are too copy-paste for my liking. I am also not a fan of their combat.

I agree. I also am not a huge fan of their combat BUT I think it is better than LOTRO’s.

I dont need remake of my favourite MMO. WoW is in good hands.
But Id love to play remake of Anarchy Online. I never really got into it. But I can see how it could be ton of fun with modern graphics.
Would be also awesome to see Neocron remake.

All the games under the Daybreak umbrella to……almost any other studio not under that umbrella.

If they keep running what they have into the ground and pissing off players they might be having to sell off their stable, which would only be a win for fans.
