Star Citizen discusses alpha 3.23 EVA updates, lines up multiple events and a new free trial for February

Star Citizen is a game that’s mostly about internet spaceships, but sometimes players need to engage in some extra-vehicular activity, or EVA for short. The mechanics of moving around in the void of space will be seeing some updates in alpha 3.23, which are the subject of the game’s returning episode of Star Citizen Live.

Many of the updates to EVA, which fans may recall were first showcased at last year’s CitizenCon, include character models mostly laying flat while in space to prevent banging off of things, character heads being tied to mouselook in order to maintain that flat position, smoother transitions when exiting and entering EVA, new zero-g traversal using a hand crawl animation, and the addition of limited EVA fuel for space suits as well as momentum.

The video also outlines updates planned for personal item interaction, which removes the need to use a mouse cursor to interact with items and replaces it with a more familiar – and faster – interaction button prompt that links to things players can touch, grab, or otherwise get their grubby little space mitts on.

In other Star Citizen news, the month of February will be seeing the launch of multiple events including a Valentine’s Day event, a Lunar New Year event, the return of Jumptown and the Siege of Orison, and another new free fly trial to encourage new arrivals to the ‘verse. That last one may be rather vital as fellow blogger The Nosy Gamer has found that January sales for CIG were down 30% from that same time last year.

Longtime MMORPG gamers will know that Star Citizen was originally Kickstarted for over $2M back in 2012 with a planned launch for 2014. As of 2024, it still lingers in an incomplete but playable alpha, having raised over $650M from gamers over years of continuing crowdfunding and sales of in-game ships and other assets. It is currently the highest-crowdfunded video game ever and has endured both indefatigable loyalty from advocates and immense skepticism from critics. A co-developed single-player title, Squadron 42, has also been repeatedly delayed.
