It looks like the explosive popularity of one specific co-op anime RPG is spawning another title cut from a similar cloth. Say hello to Wuthering Waves, an open-world action RPG with co-op gameplay, a huge heaping of anime elements, and the usual character-based gacha monetization coating the whole thing.
Wuthering Waves comes from Chinese developer Kuro Games, which has released other gacha titles like Twin Tail Battleground and Punishing: Gray Raven. The game takes place in the sci-fi world of Solaris-3, where dangers from monsters known as Tacet Discords roam and empowered individuals known as Resonators combat the threat.
According to reporting from The Escapist, gameplay follows a similar path to GI in that players swap between a team of three party members, though each character’s arrival and departure engages a special ability. Players can also collect echos of monsters to empower characters similar to GI’s artifacts. As for gacha, things read pretty similar to other RPGs with the same model.
The game recently wrapped up a second closed beta, which saw Kuro outline several planned changes ahead of launch. Speaking of launch, the game will release on PC via direct download or the Epic Games Store, iOS, and Android on May 22nd. Fans are encouraged to join in on a pre-registration campaign for the title, or there’s a quick teaser trailer waiting below for those who are curious. Just don’t expect any straight answers about what’s happening plot-wise.
