Star Citizen’s current development roadmap tentatively plots alpha 4.0 for the third quarter of this year

Regular readers and followers of Star Citizen news know that CIG has been promising a “road to 4.0” in recent months — recall that it was the throughline for 2022’s CitizenCon and Chris Roberts alluded to both 4.0 and 1.0 as steps forward in development, though no timetables were provided. We now have at least the first inkling of a timetable, as the sandbox’s release view roadmap has added cards for alpha 4.0.

Features that are intended for this next build include additional character customization features, the Pyro system, life support systems, engineering gameplay, a new fire hazard to deal with, multi-tool updates including charge and drain features, and v1 of server meshing. As for alpha 4.0’s release, that’s tentatively set for sometime in the third quarter of this year.

It’s at this point that we remind readers that CIG has actively gotten mad at followers for taking release view postings as a promise, saying that the game’s active development means features and progress can shift at any time, so obviously take all of this with a mountain of salt before reading what’s next.

As for things that are confirmed to be coming for absolute certain, this week’s Inside Star Citizen video announces the release of two new vehicles: the Sabre Firebird missile-launching fighter and the Ursa Medivac medical van. Both of these new vehicles will make their in-game debut at the Invictus Launch Week free-fly event, which is scheduled to begin today.

Longtime MMORPG gamers will know that Star Citizen was originally Kickstarted for over $2M back in 2012 with a planned launch for 2014. As of 2024, it still lingers in an incomplete but playable alpha, having raised over $650M from gamers over years of continuing crowdfunding and sales of in-game ships and other assets. It is currently the highest-crowdfunded video game ever and has endured both indefatigable loyalty from advocates and immense skepticism from critics. A co-developed single-player title, Squadron 42, has also been repeatedly delayed.
