Survival sandbox Valheim expands its early access to Mac gamers next week

Before you ask, no, Valheim has still not emerged from early access. But it did just roll out its massive Ashlands expansion back in May, and now it’s looking forward to expanding its survival sandbox tendrils a bit further into Mac fans’ devices next week.

“Coffee Stain Publishing and Iron Gate are excited to announce that their hit viking survival game Valheim, currently in Early Access, will be launching on Mac via the Mac App Store on June 10th,” the studios announced this week. “Players across the world will soon be able to experience the legendary 10th viking realm on Mac as Valheim comes to yet another platform following its Xbox launch in 2023.” Yes, full cross-play is expected.

Again, the indie team here is using the word “launch,” but it means early access launch; in reality the Xbox page for the game doesn’t make that clear at all and the words early access do not appear on the Xbox lander, though that’s most definitely the state of development for the game on both platforms.

The press release reiterates that Valheim is “get[ting] ready for its 1.0 release, which will add the final endgame destination called the Deep North.” We’re not expecting that until at least 2025, as Iron Gate itself told Steam fans it needed “at least another two years (counting from January 2023)” – which would put it three years total in early access.
