Bungie’s plan for Destiny 2’s eleventh year is less linear and more about world-building

Bungie has been operating Destiny 2 for a decade now, and that means next year is the 11th of storytelling in a world full of shooting stuff. But the developers are planning to shake things up a little bit in the next year, and it comes down to a different approach to storytelling than the decade leading into The Final Shape. If you’ve been accustomed to the game following big, linear tranches of story, be forewarned that next year is meant to have more self-contained episodes that players can more easily jump right into.

That doesn’t mean the game is backing off from larger storytelling, Bungie says, just that The Final Shape represented a major changing point and for now the team wants to focus less on big stories and more on smaller, self-contained episodes replete with world-building. If that excites you, then the next year is something to look forward to in turn, although how any of these ideas will be iterated upon remains to be seen.
