Followers of Star Citizen are likely very familiar with the Bar Citizen community meet-ups that run every year. These free player-run events allow fans of the alpha sandbox (of the appropriate age of course) to come together across the globe to hang out, enjoy giveaways, and often meet with developers of the title.
It’s that free admission part that’s important to bear in mind when you consider a recent Reddit post from a Chinese fan that leveraged several serious accusations against the organizing party of a pre-event dinner for the Bar Citizen in Shenzhen, including charging some eye-watering prices to attend, the profits of which were allegedly pocketed by the event runner, as well as supposed use of unpaid volunteer labor and an attempt to deceive CIG.
Multiple replies to the thread, however, point out the fact that when the matter was brought up last week in SC’s official forums, CIG had already acted against the attempt to charge for access.
“Upon learning that the pre-event dinner was ticketed, we promptly requested it be either canceled or offered at no charge, which the organizers kindly accommodated,” explained community director Tyler “Zyloh” Witkin. “We know firsthand that organizing an event of that scale requires a tremendous amount of planning and expense. […] However, it’s important to us to be as accessible as possible.”
