The Daily Grind: If you could banish one piece of gear from MMOs, what would it be?

When MMOs were new, the iconic chainmail bikini was a whole damn thing. It was the big joke in the games industry, the idea that somehow, a bikini top made out of chainmail was more protective than just, you know, a bikini made out of cloth, and we all snarked about it and yet the games kept adding them anyway. The first MMO I ever played had leather and plate bikinis, however, and wearable by all characters, not just The Ladies, and somehow to my memory I never actually wore a chain bikini until World of Warcraft. Either way, they were always ridiculous. If I want my toon to look slinky, just give me the slinky dress.

Even so, I probably wouldn’t ban the chainmail bikini from the universe if given the ultimate delete stick. I tend to follow the ol’ if it’s not hurting anybody, leave it be philosophy, and hurting my eyes with tacky doesn’t count. Still… you could troll the heck out of a Star Wars MMO by deleting lightsabers, save high fashion in Guild Wars 2 by deleting neon dyes, and destroy hoarding MMOs forever by deleting bags. Maybe these things would be a net positive as well as funny?

Surely you can think of something whose absence would make your MMO a better place. If you could banish one piece of gear from MMOs, what would it be?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
