The Daily Grind: What’s your preferred MMO combat playstyle (as opposed to class or role)?

Gosh, that was a mistake.

MMO classes don’t merely have to be divided into the traditional tank/DPS/healer categories. There are plenty of other ways to separate classes and even specs by the playstyle that they offer. And it’s these playstyles that seem go to the heart of a gamer’s approach to an MMO.

One of my favorite combat playstyles is a class that runs in and lays down several different AOE fields or quickly-spreading debuffs to cause maximum chaos. Think City of Heroes’ Illusion Controller, Guild Wars 2’s Necromancer, or World of Warcraft’s Unholy Death Knight. I also love taking a break from melee builds for some casual long-range auto-attacks if a class let’s me pew pew to my heart’s content.

What are some of your preferred combat playstyles in MMOs? What hits that sweet spot in your head?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
