As promised, co-op survival sandbox Aloft has officially launched into early access today with a $24.99 price tag. The Funcom-published, Astrolabe-developed game sends up to eight players into a shattered, island-filled sky world to restore the ecosystem and ultimately pilot their own island skyship, decorated with flora, fauna, and furniture as they see fit.
“The world of Aloft is one of floating islands shaped by the wind. Soar between them on your customizable glider, gathering resources and discovering ancient technology as you go. Transform any island into your home above the clouds, and harness the wind with crafted sails, rudder, and helm. Farm, cook, care for animals, and restore the balance of nature by combating the spreading corruption. […] With today’s Early Access Launch, the game has grown into three full biomes, which is set to expand further throughout the Early Access period. Creativity and community lie at the heart of Aloft. Player-built skyships can be shared directly on the Steam Workshop for others to enjoy, and you can even bring along your entire skyship when joining a friend’s game, making it possible to create a whole moving village of eight skyships in co-op.”
We played Aloft last week during the press preview ahead of this early launch, finding it beautiful and charming, slightly tedious though not particularly punitive, and definitely worth some attention as it continues to expand through early access.
And expand it will, according to the roadmap released today. Astrolabe says that over the course of 2025, it’ll be working on UX and UI improvements, Steam Workshop modding, additional tutorial content, island diversity, improved combat, animal breeding, beekeeping, and more of just about everything: tools, monsters, gliders, craftables, materials, buildings, emotes, and biomes.
