The next phase of Star Citizen’s ever-lengthening alpha test is nearly here as CIG continues its testing of alpha 3.19 on the public test server earlier in the week before it goes to the live alpha test server. Open game development is fun.

This latest build brings on things like the revamped Lorville layout, salvage missions, improved AI behavior in FPS combat, new tractor beam features, adjustments to mining, and the return of the new player tutorial, while the latest PTS build has made a couple of minor adjustments, applied a few bug fixes, and addressed some server crashes. There is still no timeline for when alpha 3.19 will go to the live servers, but testing does look to continue apace.

On the subject of the game’s new tutorial, that was the subject of this week’s Star Citizen Live as devs moved viewers through its new user experience. The tutorial’s return is noted as possible since basic game mechanics for SC have stabilized, and the tutorial now reflects much of that, with instructions on using the mobiGlas, eating and drinking, ship retrieval and flight basics, and other important steps. Both the full tutorial preview and a briefing from The Noobifier await below.

Longtime MMORPG gamers will know that Star Citizen was originally Kickstarted for over $2M back in 2012 with a planned launch for 2014. As of 2022, it still lingers in an incomplete but playable alpha, having raised over $500M from gamers over years of continuing crowdfunding and sales of in-game ships and other assets. It is currently the highest-crowdfunded video game ever and has endured both indefatigable loyalty from advocates and immense skepticism from critics. A co-developed single-player title, Squadron 42, has also been repeatedly delayed.
