Interview: ArtCraft’s J. Todd Coleman on prepping Crowfall’s Artisan Engine for the broader industry

Yesterday, Crowfall studio ArtCraft announced it was spinning off a brand-new company dubbed ArtCraft Technologies that would basically turn Crowfall’s engine into a marketable product for other studios, “providing game developers with turnkey technology solutions for creating large-scale Massively Multiplayer Online games.” We had opportunity to chat with ArtCraft Creative Director J Todd Coleman about the move and what it means for the studio and genre. Read on!

Massively OP: So to start, we’re curious about the “why” behind the new studio. Is ArtCraft thinking of this venture as an extra revenue stream for the company? Or is it trying to encourage more MMORPGs – or maybe both?

J. Todd Coleman: This wasn’t originally part of our plan. In the last 12 months, we’ve had a few different studios contact us to see if we would consider licensing our technology. The more we looked into it, the more it made sense. The additional revenue stream is great, obviously, but that has to be balanced against the potential distraction. We wouldn’t have done this if we didn’t see it as a great strategic move for the company, and a chance to leverage what we’ve built into something much bigger.

Wizard101’s Doctor Who event is bigger on the inside

Someone over at KingsIsle is obviously a big Doctor Who fan, because Wizard101’s current event is a thinly veiled homage to that sci-fi series. Players are challenged to seek out the Professor and his five B.O.X.E.S., which look suspiciously like red-themed TARDISes.

“Besides a new journey though the Spiral, what does your Wizard have to gain from the Five B.O.X.E.S.?” the devs ask. “How about the first craftable mounts, the Digmoore Pogo Stick and Ravenwood Pogo Stick! You should also visit Rose Piper to learn crafting recipes for exclusive furniture items. Plus the Professor will lead you to epic rewards for your Wizard.”

Meanwhile at its sister game, Pirate101 is offering a discounted deal on a year subscription. From now through May 6th, you can secure 12 months of sub time for $60, which comes out to $5 a month. Not too shabby, even for penny-pinching pirates!

Jukebox Heroes: Five great YouTube channels for MMO music

As a collector and reviewer of MMORPG soundtracks, I owe a great debt to fellow music lovers who take the time to somehow extract files from the game directories and make these tracks available to the world at large. YouTube has been an invaluable treasure trove of MMO music, thanks to these devoted fans, and I thought I would give some of them props today for their hard and continuing work.

While there are plenty of channels where you might see a person post a playlist at one point for a single game, there are a handful of YouTubers who see their mission to continually post new music for ongoing online games. Today we are going to look at five channels and the game soundtracks that they cover. We’re talking hours and hours of music at your fingertips here, so set aside your plans for the rest of the day and get listening!

Wizard101 plans its 10-year anniversary while Pirate101 grooms Handsome Dan

With the 10th anniversary of Wizard101 approaching, the team at KingsIsle is squirreling itself away behind closed doors to plan a grand soiree. We don’t know the details of this party yet, but fans have the go-ahead to get excited about this “grand celebration.”

Over at sister game Pirate101, the team is adding “a little more flair” to the bulldog Handsome Dan and is promoting the 101 games Fansite Festival that’s taking place on April 15th around both games. You’ll want to check out the events page to see what the community is doing.

The KingsIsle team recently went to SXSW and had a lot of fun showing off its roster of games. Check it out after the break!

Halloween events across the MMORPG verse, 2017 edition

Hey, you. Yeah, you, dude leeching candy from the bucket you bought “for the neighborhood kids.” And you, lady still trying to decide between “Princess Leia” and “lazy zombie” for your costume (go Leia, duh). Put all that aside and get into some MMOs instead! Halloween is only one night in real life, but in MMORPGs, it goes on for days or even weeks. Some studios will probably even forget to turn it off! Others will let you run around with a flaming pumpkin head mask for all eternity!

Here’s what we’re looking at this year for Halloween across the MMORPG verse.

Boat mounts, Halloween, and Billy the Kid blast into Wizard101 and Pirate101

As Pirate101 celebrates its fifth birthday this month, there is no shortage of things to keep budding buccaneers occupied in this strategy MMO. New boat mounts, a practice PvP mode, emojis, more quests, a team-up ledger, and automatic companions have all arrived thanks to the latest update. Additionally, Billy the Kid — a cowboy goat, get it? — has joined the roster of companions that players can collect.

Over in Wizard101, Halloween is more pronounced as Spooky Bob and his crew return for another creeptastic event. “Dworgyn and Jack Hallow will again offer their spooky quests to wizards new and old. You may even catch the ink-hungry Vampire Squid in Cyclops Lane if you’re lucky,” the team cackled.

Additionally, KingsIsle has signed up to be part of this year’s Extra Life charity gaming marathon. Players can help out by joining the KI team and raising funds for local hospitals.

Wizard101 and Pirate101 weather DDOS attacks

If you have tried to log in and play Wizard101 or Pirate101 in the past 24 hours, you may have experienced disappointment as the game services informed you that it was down. This is due to some nasty DDoS attacks that have been targeting KingsIsle’s games, according to the studio.

“Since yesterday, KingsIsle has been mitigating severe DDOS attacks against our games Pirate101 and Wizard101,” KingsIsle reported. “This means your game play will be impacted until we can resolve the issue. Many will be unable to log in. We have always taken care of our community when trouble arrives, and we will be sure to do so again once the issue has been fully resolved.”

It looks as though some service has been restored to both games, although it doesn’t sound as if the attack is over.

Perfect Ten: MMOs obsessed with the floating islands trope

One of the fun things about this hobby is that certain tropes repeat themselves constantly. And they’re usually weirdly specific tropes, too. Poop quests, for example. So many MMOs have one quest or another that make you dealing with poop. Someone has a fixation that is probably not entirely healthy, and that someone keeps getting hired to design quests.

But sometimes you try to come up with a trope that’s so specific that it has to be unique. Or at least rare. “MMOs that feature a zone full of floating islands requiring flight to travel around.” At least one zone, and it is traveled around via flight. That cannot be common, that has to be…

Wait. How did I not only get a full list but actually have to decline some entries? How the heck did this happen? There are this many MMOs using this astonishingly specific trope? How did this happen and why?

Wizard101 tests chat channels while Pirate101 has fun with a rooster sheriff

Here’s something interesting we learned this week by perusing the Wizard101 newsletter: The game apparently has a stronger following than you’d think among YouTubers, bloggers, and other social media mavens.

We also discovered that Wizard101 is currently testing its next big update, which will contain PvP daily rewards, main quest designation, and actual chat channels. That last one comes as a surprise because Wizard101 was notable for keeping communication safe and barebones as to protect the young ‘uns. We’ll have to see how the chat channels deal with potty mouths and predators.

Over in Pirate101’s part of the KingsIsle empire, there’s a new American flag-themed soaring eagle mount to buy. Everyone also seems to be having fun collecting Rooster Cogburn, a new sheriff companion who’s cleaning up the wild west of the pirate realm. Check him out below!

KingsIsle shows off new Wizard101 and Pirate101 content

How long does it take for KingsIsle developers to go from concept to execution when it comes to Wizard101 and Pirate101 content? According to a new YouTube video in which the devs answer some player questions, the answer is roughly “six months” on average. There’s your fun fact for the day.

The video also shows off some new Wizard101 Pigswick spells that are coming to the game soon and then pops over to Pirate101 for a tour through upcoming quests. Give it a watch after the break! The Wizard101 info starts around the 42-minute mark, while the Pirate101 adventures take off around 51 minutes into the show.
