For everything, there is a season, and in the case of Diablo III, there are several seasons. One of those seasons is coming to a close soon, in fact, so players who have taken part in the antics of season 7 will need to be ready for the rollover. Sure, you’re ready for the fact that your seasonal characters will now be normal characters, but what will you do about blood shards? Do you have too many blood shards? You didn’t think about blood shards at all, did you?!
That’s all right; if you have too many you’ll just be temporarily placed over the cap, but you can’t pick up more until you’ve spent some.

Almost anything unlocked on an individual seasonal character will roll back into your main account, including the total amount of experience (not levels) earned toward Paragon rank.
