Gamers played a Star Citizen web game to earn a chance at a medical ship variant

Players who would like to roleplay the fantasy of being a high-tech emergency medical rescue service can get their chance with Star Citizen’s Apollo spaceship. The spotlight was on this rapid response ship this week, with fans even given the opportunity to earn a a chance to win an upgraded variant of the ship by playing a browser arcade game on the site.

“The legendary Apollo chassis from Roberts Space Industries is the gold standard in medivac and rapid emergency response,” RSI said, “having provided critical aid to the known universe for well over two centuries. When one thinks of first class medical rescue, one thinks of the RSI Apollo.”

The studio’s July recap report is out, with attention given last month to shoring up Alpha turret bugs, creating the new Anvil Hawk ship, decorating the Freelancer interior, working on hair and head technology, piecing together Squadron 42 outfits, developing animations for females, redesigning the 300i, laying out more story scenes, shaping moons with various biomes, stabilizing hte game editor, and (most importantly) transforming a bar scene into a “living breathing environment.”

MOP reader DK pointed out to us that CIG’s minigame page is misleading; we’ve updated accordingly.

Hello Citizens,

We want to thank everyone who participated in the RSI Apollo Astromedics Minigame Contest that ended last week.

In total, we had over 17,000 entries that scored more than 100,000 points and therefore were eligible for the contest. Out of those, three winners were picked at random, and those are:
1st prize – @Mongolka – “First Responder” ship package + additional Medivac variant
2nd prize – @Tomb – RSI Apollo Medivac
3rd prize – @RlN – RSI Apollo Triage

Congratulations to the winners, your rewards have already been distributed to your accounts!

Remember that everyone else can still unlock the Guardian Angel badge by scoring at least 100,000 points in the Astromedics game to gain access to the special variant.

We are planning more events like this in the future, so make sure to subscribe to our Newsletter and always have an eye on Spectrum to not miss any future announcements.

See you in the ‘verse!

I’m sure that still won’t stop people from claiming “It’s a scam!…” though. ;)

The problem with proclaiming facts based on CIG pronouncements is that their claims have turned out to be inaccurate on some occasions. Perhaps even self-aggrandizing.

What a bunch of damn scam artists.

Chris Roberts hasn’t finished a game he started since 1994. Someone always has to take it away from him and strip out the garbage and publish it for him. Erin Roberts on the other hand has finished a ton of Lego Games, on time, on budget, and playable. Chris needs to demote himself to Creative Director, and Erin needs to be the Game Director.
Until then, this disaster is going to be in development hell as long as the ******* keep giving him money for pixel ships with feature creep built in every other friday.

Reader
Joe Blobers

Erin Roberts is global head of production covering as well executive producer slot, since mid 2015. As you said, he did made successful Lego releases but also worked with Chris on a many of his projects including Privateer 2 and StarLancer.

All memorable to gamers. So rejoice because CIG dit not wait for internet commenter advice to make their org chart.

By the way the pixel ship are flying with many backers inside. Have a look to this week video with 50 players and + 25 ships of different shape in one instance and location. Air and land battle.
Pixels everywhere.

This mess will never get released. Too much incentive to keep it in development hell. And Chris hasnt actually finished a game since what.. 1994? I wish he had just used skyboxes, landing zones and off the shelf systems. So sad.

Also, I have an account with an 890, a Carrack, a Terrapin, a Freelancer MIS, an Avenger and a Nox if anybody still has faith in this atrocity. Ill let the account go for cheap. PM me for more information.

i don’t think you can DM on here.

anyways use the greymarket subreddit like a normal person. you can probably get melt value for all your ships unless one of them is particular desirable and limited.

Reader
Gene Elder

You know you want that 890. gimme an offer and well go talk to a broker. The MIS is going to be flyable by December.. and who knows, you may be able to scan stuff in that shiny Terrapin by 2020 or so.

Your description of a game space match NMS not SC that was never intented to be neither EVE, NMS or Elite. Skyboxes, landing zones and off the shelf systems as never been on the table…

You said to have sold 4/5th of your fleet already in past thread? So the 1/5th equal those 6 ships? You can always go to grey market and try to sell. They will sale for more in a few quarters after the next 4 patches. And who knows, may be you will see by that time SC have delivered something for you.

Other option, melt them down for UEC. I heard there is no more cap.

of course sky boxes and landing zones were on the table. that was there original plan, it was only when they decided to implement procedural planets it came off the table. for someone that follows SC all the time im surprised you dont know that

it’s still to a degree the plan. all these large cities adn planet sized cities will have little more play area than the arc corp social module.

the landing zone thing is still going to be a thing.

Reader
primal

yeah but hes obviously talking about specific areas of a planet where you just drop into. it would definitely be easier in ways. wouldnt of required as much tech for sure. might be better in the long run, would be like eve otherwise everyone trying to jump through a “gate” at the same time

Reader
Gene Elder

Procedural Planets and 64bit precision were both unnecessary tech that added years to the project. Im still wondering why they needed to use the chicken eyes tech for FP combat. The game was already based off of the Crytech engine with built in FPS and AI. Speaking of AI, I am now convinced that as described, it won’t be feasible until 2024 or so. They have barely put a dent into an actual working AI.

Reader
Joe Blobers

I agree Primal that the principle of skybox and landing zone were part of the game as obviously, you have to render “something” of the endless space and land your ship somewhere.
My answer was intented to say: “SC won’t use basic representation of space or basic landing zone like NMS”.

Here is the Kickstarter words about details (not specific to space representation but that give a clear direction about what SC won’t be… ):

10X the detail of current AAA games

Most current gen “AAA” games have around 10,000 polygons for a character and 30,000 or so for a vehicle. In Star Citizen, the characters are detailed at 100,000 polygons, the fighter at 300,000 and the Space Carrier 7 million! This allows unparalleled detail, making the visuals more immersive than has ever been achieved before.”

In SC we are able to see a space station in geostationary orbit passing overhead when standing on the planet surface, and then fly up to that same station – it’s not a ‘static backdrop’ the way a Skybox is, it’s actually rendering what is visible.

Space, on the other hand, definitely has a “spacebox” texture wrapping around the entire star system map, expected to be rendered as 3D object with gaz cloud nebula tech CIG is working on.

More time wasting by these jokers. If you think they intend on sincerely making the game you funded you are a big dummy.

eh right now it’s close to the game i backed for in terms of the game itself, balance tuning and earnable through gameplay everything considerations aside.

it obviously needs more content and variety of content but in terms of having a core of substance and being a good demonstration of what i backed for – all of that is there currently and in need of balance and making more of it than it being a matter of existing at all or not.

i should clarifiy – i mean the gameplay/gamey parts of the game. obviously they’ve got some more big tech hurdles to overcome

Well, it’s really a giant Roberts Folly, with no one having the power to reign in the Emperor and his new clothes. He really wants to make the BDSSG eveh. And while his marketing is exceptional, in game design he is his own worst enemy. Makes the same mistakes over and over….

Reader

from my research, I can’t find a game Roberts has completed since 1994. Every game after that has had to be taken away from him, trimmed and released after being fixed. I wish I had read up on him before falling for his “everyone gets a millennium falcon” pitch. 6 years later, I am no-where near having my millennium falcon fantasy fulfilled by that travesty of a tech demo.

I know, I know, “feature creep”, but it would be kind of hilarious to be playing Surgeon Simulator in the back of one of these ships while the pilot is pulling high-g evasive maneuvers up front.

the project is going to be nothing but mini-games. Expect tons of golf-swing mechanics and tetris games to keep you busy.

Yes SC will have many different type of jobs associated with some type of challenge, from easy to hard or even multistation requirements, depending on expected revenues level.

For those looking for something more simple, NMS should make the trick.

On top of that you can look at a skybox while pressing laser mining buton a thousand times.

also apparently the space ship unlocking from the flash style game is over and it was a contest which they picked 3 at random from 17k qualifying entries (the api for the game reporting scores is incredibly insceure and easily scriptable).

all you get now is a badge that lets you BUY the “special” variant.

jumped into SC to do a live local demo for friends at the meetup last weekend after 3.2.1 dropped and either it’s got some new issues going on or it didn’t like that i ddin’t manually delete the USER folder and it went like this the entire demo until i tried to log out in the master bedroom of the 600i lost gravity and died.

which to note if i had any custom in game purchased gear equipped on my ship it would then be permenently lost (until at least the next wipe when i would havbe all my money back to rebuy the gear or w/e) as is my understanding currently.

anyways a bit of egg on m face for this, plan to take a 2nd shot at a live local demo perhaps tonight or this weekend.

Reader
Joe Blobers

I noticed on Reddit a thread about losing gear.:

There are several tricks that sounds to work. No need to wait for a wipe apparently.
