Massively OP’s Weirdest MMORPG Stories of 2018: Maintenance mode, shmaintenance mode

happy birthday to me

Today we’re finishing off our countdown of Massively OP’s weirdest MMORPG stories of 2018!

Coming in at #1 on our list is…

Classic Guild Wars 1 just got a huge graphics update

This one is weird in the most awesome way imaginable. Years ago ArenaNet basically put classic Guild Wars in a permanent maintenance mode, obviously to focus on Guild Wars 2. The studio deserves much praise for keeping it alive, even if the population is pretty thin these days; it’s one of the greatest MMOs ever made as far as I’m concerned.

But this year, ArenaNet – specifically Bill Freist and Stephen Clarke-Willson – gave it some love, with graphics settings options, better window support, improved anti-aliasing options, and a level of detail toggle that makes the distant world look gorgeous. They even teased a big inventory and color-coded items.

So much for mere maintenance mode! Now, wanna sell us a whole new campaign?

Thanks for playing along with our weird stories countdown, and don’t forget to check out our annual MMORPG awards and our blooper awards!

So It was not worthwhile to update back then. No you shut it down and gave prizes for people to leave the game. Why don’t you just make Guild Wars 3 already and break all of those guild wars 2 players hearts?

If only Funcom took same stance with GW/FFXI maintainance regarding Anarchy Online :p

I mean if all companies had such maintainance mode, it wouldnt be a “scary” word for favorite mmo games anymore!

I would play the f*ck outta AO if it had a decent graphical update

I could have sworn this was what they actually did – or at least, did tease a few years back.
fake edit: yup, they did, back in 2015 – https://massivelyop.com/2015/06/25/anarchy-onlines-new-graphical-engine-is-finally-live/

They released a new engine but all it did was higher res textures, nothing much else and doesnt seem like the end result is much better than the original. Also it comes with occasional crashes that dont happen on main client

I don’t consider that to be a update. That was one of the laziests changes i’ve ever seen.

AO did get a sort-of graphics update a short while ago. Trouble being is that it was a half-baked job and only covered a small fraction of the game graphics.

The planning, and long effort put in, was for a full on overhaul, but it just got to be to big of a job for to few developers with to little money. So the small bit that was fully completed was released, and that’s that.

To bad, I was all set to return as I quite liked a lot about AO.

There is a lot things that are very unique to AO really and if they took failed Conan IP(in AoC) to create a new and succesful game, I dont understand how they didnt bother with AO yet
