World of Warcraft’s next raid, Battle of Dazar’alor, starts unlocking on January 22

It turns out that the next World of Warcraft raid won’t exactly have sections differentiated for the two major factions; as the raid preview explains, Horde players will be turned into Alliance soldiers for the middle of the raid, and Alliance players will become Horde soldiers for the final portion of the raid. You can experience it for yourself when the Normal and Heroic versions of the raid unlock on January 22nd, or you can wait until the raid finder version unlocks week by week starting with the first wing on January 29th.

The Battle of Dazar’alor leads player through nine bosses, with both factions fighting through the Jadefire Masters, some version of Grong, and the Champions of the Light. Then players will take the role of the Alliance while pushing to face off against King Rastakhan, and the Horde will ultimately face off against Jaina Proudmoore. You’ll have to wait a few more weeks to take on the raid yourself, though, so you can start speculating about what your human will look like as an undead. (Or vice versa.)

Imagine all the Alliance having to kill their beloved Jaina, dressed as a faction they hate no less. :D Should be fun!

This makes much more sense than putting faction restrictions on certain boss encounters but is much less interesting too.

Jaina final boss? Yes please. Let’s put that character to rest if Blizz isn’t going to do anything good with her.

Meh. I resubbed at the beginning of the last expansion for a year. Quit playing after 3 weeks. Haven’t logged in since. News like this makes it more and more likely that subscription will run out before I am compelled to log in again. This expansion is just such a letdown after legion. I almost wish I could level lock in legion, and ignore wfa entirely.

Quite a lot of money wasted if you don’t play I guess :(

Maybe classic will lure you back and offset some of that loss ?

They will not get a penny from me. I find no enjoyment in the game anymore and it plays like a mobile game. Slowly filling bars, minor rewards, and my god the gambling upgrades. Blizzard has no soul anymore.

Compound that with the fact that they made the combat somehow less fun and you’ve got a game that really just sucks to play.

Legion struck a good balance between less skill bloat and skills in general while still having traits, passives, and class mechanics that made classes feel complete and fun. But at least for me, it’s not the combat that needs work, but the class design needs a bit of tweaking. It’s still fun, but needs work for sure.

Let’s be honest, WoW and most other MMO’s have from the start been about slowly filling bars with minor rewards and RNG loot. XP bars, rep bars, long grinds even through WOTLK. I’d say it was far worse in the genre’s beginning that it is now. There’s something else that you’re not liking, but it’s not this, because what you just described is the core of the genre lol.

I saw on mmorpg.com that Blizzard has lost a second CFO in a week Amrita Ahuja has now departed the company also .

Not sure if I have missed the news somehow on this website ? but I don’t recall it being reported here yet .

I might be in the minority but I’m really looking forward to the factional raid. I imagine it’ll be kind of like Culling of Stratholme or Escape from Durnholde. I’m hoping it’ll be more story-oriented.

I’m Alliance, so I didn’t really give a crap about the Uldir bosses. But Jaina, Mekkatorque, and Troll King Dude? That’ll be neat.

Oh I thought the swap was an optional thing, not an integral part of the experience you cannot essentially “skip” if you want to complete the raid in its entirety… bizarre and not overly intuitive, I suppose that’s why so many weren’t thrilled with the idea when they first unveiled it

I did roll myself a couple toons on horde-side to witness the diverging storyline back at launch but that was my choice, I don’t really fancy having myself arbitrarily turned into a character I never rolled because reasons :P

And I’m guessing the new allied races won’t unlock until after raid finder wing 3 knowing Blizzard. /sigh

The only reason that I’m still playing is to roll a Kul Tiran human. I’m getting to the point where I may unsubscribe until they show up.

The sad thing is they managed to destroy any real excitement for a classic mmo addition (new playable races) with the way they’ve implemented these allied races.

Time gated rep grinds behind an expansion paywall. Fuck off blizzard and your Activision overlords.

I’m only ok with this if it’s a prelude to removing or at least drastically opening up faction restrictions on shit. Is there any lore justification for this that’s not on the WoW page?

Because this makes no sense to me and seems really odd as a decision, almost as if their “NO, HORDE AND ALLIANCE ARE NOW VERY WAR-Y AND WE HAVE FACTION STUFF!” decisions are biting them in the ass since it expands the scope of work needed to be done to accommodate dual perspective from storylines.

Well, they are enabling cross-faction communication, so I think that they are moving in that direction.

Wasn’t that primarily a response to them breaking the mod that RPers were heavily using to communicate across factions? Seemed more aimed at that then any core/systemic cross-faction communications as a directional shift.

Could be! My immediate thought was that this would facilitate cross-faction groups, but I am not an RPer in WoW, so your suggestion did not occur to me.
