Path of Exile outlines its plans to make casters more active as it moves into the Synthesis expansion

Something got cast.

For too long in Path of Exile, casting spells has been a sub-par path to being a caster. You’d think that would be, like… the most basic element of serving as a spellcaster, but passive trigger effects have long made casters want to do things other than cast spells, compounded by spells that took too long to cast and were thus fodder for using highly specialized effects. Ahead of the next expansion’s patch notes, the designers have explained the overall balance goals moving into the game’s next stage of play, which includes a shift away from the metagame of casters not, well, casting.

This has resulted in making triggered effects less potent as well as changing (and adding) several passive support options, putting more power in the hands of players making active use of skills. The balance changes also look at specific combinations of stats that were more powerful than intended along with rebalancing aspects like critical strike (which now has a minimum value of 0% instead of the previous 5%). Check out the full rundown for a top-level look at the design goals.

Hehe I couldn’t rage that much about PoE, but I agree that they pretty much ignore all criticism. Generally the problem is that they never fix or remove broken/bad mechanics, they just stack new mechanics on top every league.
PoE could use a hoarding consultant and a serious spring clean :D

Agree about maps and inventory space. The space situation is the most requested QoL issue and they are stubborn about. I do however, find the game repetitively fun in moderation like any RPG that’s ‘kill monsters, get loot, repeat’.

Thankfully I don’t play the ‘meta’ so I’m free to play whatever sort of character I damn well please. Like the casting caster I cast with in Betrayal.

Making your own builds doesn’t mean you’re free of imbalance. When you get good at the game and start to play fast and tackle the hard content, you will always notice the difference. Then you have to choose between playing worse while knowing you could do better, and adapting. The latter meant not hardcasting your spells ever. I’m glad something’s being done about that.

And yet, one of the new skill gems this season requires you to stand still, casting, to charge up your big laser, before it shoots.

I dont get it.

Channeled skills of all types make me nervous considering the importance of mobility in most tough fights.

Yeah that is the problem. Those meta builds with autocast/totem/traps/etc of all kinds, are the result of the game requiring constant movement. Since this is tied so hard into the content and basic game itself, it cannot be changed just like that .. I mean they would have to change and tweak half the boss fights for a start. So yeah I think they backed themselves into a corner, willingly or not.

I love my blight witch. Just stand and channel spray purple death but I hate the moving fights. Why I can’t do the delves with her.

Do we have a MoP guild in PoE? If so, can I get an invite this league? If not, how would you all feel about creating one so we can share leveling Uniques and maps that we aren’t using?

Ouch…RIP a lot of the cast-on-crit builds?

More like RIP elemental overload – controlled destruction combo. A necessary change though, if they ever wanted people to go the spell crit route again.
