Vrooooooom: Ship of Heroes demos its superspeed travel power

Superspeed: It’s probably the first travel power that most superhero MMO players pick up. And now it’s in Ship of Heroes, per the game’s latest developer video, with plans for five different FX options to go with it.

“Back when we first announced Ship of Heroes, we planned to launch with three travel powers: flight, superspeed and teleportation,” Heroic Games says in its new dev blog. “Travel powers are really important. Players see them much more often than most powers, for the simple reason that we have hundreds of powers in powersets but only three travel powers at launch. For this reason we can’t simply use the Unreal Engine to increase ground speed while keeping the same animations as for running; that actually looks pretty bad. What looks good is to create new animations just for superspeed. We use animations that are specific to our three skeletal models.”

As you’re watching the dev toon speed around in the video, keep an eye out for some of the architectural and elevation improvements the devs have made to the game’s city too. Oh, and since you’re wondering: Yes, you can combine superspeed with superjump. Wheeeee!

Making progress. Hope they revisit the normal running animation, the walking stop animation (there’s no blending at all from the two animations) and also realize that just holding the tuck pose throughout the jump looks extremely unnatural.

This game desperately needs some real animators. No matter how nice the rest of the game looks, the animations stick out like a sore thumb.

And I dont know if its the shoddy animations or what, but the character doesnt look like its in the same plain of existence as the rest of the world. It doesnt seem grounded at all, similar to when you would watch Scooby and Shaggy walk but the ground below their feet would move slower than their walking animation.

It’s in Pre-Alpha and they are making optimization their biggest priority.

Wow.. thats pretty backwards from most development.

Not saying thats good, or bad… just saying its not standard development process.

And there is a skeptical part of me that thinks “its just the PR jargon they are using to side step the fact that their animation and modeling team is sorely lacking currently”

There is no PR Jargon here. I’ve literally seen videos where they are trying to maintain a High framerates with 100s of characters(not NPCs) on screen. I was not parroting Dev Speak. I was speaking on what I have seen.

even though my brain was screaming: want more natural body movement animation; yeah yeah yeah, they’ll get there :3

I really can’t wait to try this. Us Mac owners are about to be kicked out of City of Heroes in two months (again), so this will become ever-more important.
