Datamining offers tantalizing clue about Guild Wars 2 controller support

Ever wished you could play Guild Wars 2 from the comfort of your couch with the simplicity of a controller? That dream may one day become a reality, if a new, as-yet unused setting that noted Guild Wars 2 dataminer @that_shaman has unearthed is any indication.

The tweet includes a screenshot of code listing out keyboard configuration settings, but those settings are not stored in a local config file. However, that_shaman is resourceful and likely has tricks to poke around in the game’s working memory, and he noticed the new setting with yesterday’s patch.

Could this mean that Guild Wars 2 is headed to console? Possibly, as adding controller support to the PC version would be a reasonable first step toward a console port, and ArenaNet recently posted a job listing for “an unannounced 3rd person fantasy action console title.” A project of this scale is likely to take some time, so I wouldn’t get too excited just yet, but, that said, it’s certainly an exciting possibility.

Or maybe some programmer at ArenaNet really just wanted to play from her couch.

Update
Turns out the truth is something in the middle! “that_shaman, You’re good! I have no idea how you found this, as I tried to cover my tracks, but you are correct,” ArenaNet’s Jon Olson wrote on Reddit this afternoon. “I have been working on native controller support, as a side project in my own time. I’ve got a good deal of it all working, but it’s still got a further to go. My main goal is is to have accessibility in mind. If I can help just one person play the game that would would not otherwise be able to because of our current input controls, than I’ll be very pleased.” Well that’s wholesome!
