The Daily Grind: What’s your favorite MMO public transport system?

We talk about mounts an awful lot in this space, but what about the other ways that MMOs help us get around? Most all of these games have some sort of public transport system, whether it be City of Heroes’ subways, World of Warcraft’s flight paths, or EverQuest’s boats.

One of my personal favorite was WildStar’s taxis. The addition of a chatty driver gave those automated trips a lot of personality and a few new puns for the memory bank.

What’s your favorite MMO public transport system? When you’re not mounting up or running, how do you best like to get around in your game?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

This will likely sound silly but mine would be FFXI’s player made and player run teleport system. White Mages had the ability to teleport their party to certain areas around the game world and players would pay WHMs to do so for them. This was a game that did not have a well-established in-game travel system. Just traveling to the area where you intended to party, raid, or quest was a dangerous endeavor in and of itself and was pretty te consuming on top of it. Teleporting to these areas would cut that trip down significantly and players figured out on their own how to profit from it. I loved that it was us who built that “public transport” system.

The Ironforge > Stormwind subway is one of the few things I miss about WoW.

The World Tree in The Secret World! The accelerated slide of the original game, not the cheesy jump pads of Legends. If only they could unlock the portal looking in on Rubi-Ka’s Grid.

SWTOR’s taxis. I especially enjoyed my Sith Sorceress swooping through the Dromund Kaas jungle on a classic speeder bike.

In terms of appearance, I’d say WoW’s flights paths. Even though they are functionally similar, I like the fact that their appearance changes based on the place. Few other games do this.

In terms of functionality, I’d say Archeage’s Zeppelins, since you can jump off and glide to the ground at any point during the journey. Also, they are not things that spawn for the player only, they physically exist in the world.

This isn’t exactly a public transit system, but I enjoyed giving portals to people as a mage.
