Star Citizen marks progress on alpha 4.0’s AI, server meshing, and backend tech in October report

This week is when Star Citizen looks back at the work of last October and condenses it into a developer progress report. Regular followers know the routine by now, and those same followers should probably not be too surprised that most of the month was focused on alpha 4.0 and CitizenCon (though we’ll stick to the stuff that’s about making the game).

A significant portion of this month’s report is dedicated to AI updates for alpha 4.0 and beyond, such as crafting social AI behaviors in Pyro, a refactoring of initial reactions to combat for human enemies, work on NPCs healing downed friendlies, application of dynamic cover reactions, and synchronization of AI behaviors in meshed servers. A great deal of digital ink is also spent on the StarScript tool that CIG is building.

On the subject of server meshing, the online technology portion of the report notes testing of a refactor for the entity subscription service that places markers in-game, the game’s social system backend, and the mission system, all in preparation of alpha 4.0.

Other things of note include completion of the final steps for a Save Stanton mission, the promise of several new vehicles in development, animation progress on new animals, and development of better cloud generation and wet weather. The post also notes that this will be the final monthly report for 2024, with November and December’s progress report to be combined and released in January.

Longtime MMORPG gamers will know that Star Citizen was originally Kickstarted for over $2M back in 2012 with a planned launch for 2014. As of 2024, it still lingers in an incomplete but playable alpha, having raised over $700M from gamers over years of continuing crowdfunding and sales of in-game ships and other assets. It is currently the highest-crowdfunded video game ever and has endured both indefatigable loyalty from advocates and immense skepticism from critics. A co-developed single-player title, Squadron 42, has also been repeatedly delayed.
