RuneScape officially ends lockbox monetization January 19 with a suite of 2026 revamps

The players have spoken through Jagex’s favorite data collection method and now the studio has nailed down the official end date for the Treasure Hunter lockbox monetization model: Monday, January 19th, 2026, will be when lockboxes will be removed from the MMORPG forever after fans voted overwhelmingly in favor of the move.

As Jagex explained earlier, lockboxes, keys, and buyable sources of direct XP for skills will all be going the way of the dodo, while the game will also be undergoing a series of updates and revamps over the course of next year that seek to address problems with visuals, UI, cosmetics, and gameplay.

A full “integrity roadmap” and other update details for the year to come in RuneScape is promised in a broadcast on January 19th, but the video confirming Treasure Hunter’s end also gives some initial details about these planned revamps, such as more grounded cosmetic looks and cosmetic toggle options, lighting updates, and balancing refinements to profession and combat skill lines. On that final point, combat beta worlds will be opening sometime in the near future.

In other RuneScape news, this week’s patch has officially wrapped up the Catalyst league, readied up another double XP event for November 14th through the 24th, and applied a lineup of hotfixes and general gameplay updates.
