War Thunder unveils closed beta testing for infantry game modes starting later this month

While gameplay in War Thunder has always been about military vehicles battling it out against each other, the game’s next major update scheduled for late December is going to start the process of putting boots on the ground literally, as closed beta testing of infantry game modes will arrive with the Line of Contact update.

Here’s generally how it will work: Players will be able to take direct command of a squad leader, outfitting their squads with a variety of weapons and gear, then direct squadmates with a promised few clicks while also taking part in ground-level FPS battles, all while other players command land and air vehicles to help with objectives. The beta test will take place in the new map of Granitograd, will feature two playable nations, and offer up arcade and realistic variants of the Domination game mode, which tasks teams with capturing and holding zones.

The Line of Contact update will represent the first of several stages of testing for infantry modes, with the promise of more nations, maps, and hardware added over time, ultimately moving to open testing sometime in 2026. The patch also promises to bring more new maps, dozens of new vehicles, and adjustments for existing modes and vehicles for the rest of War Thunder. Otherwise, if you’re eager to get your mixed arms beta testing on, signups are open now for PC, Xbox X|S, and PlayStation 5.
