The Daily Grind: Do cutscenes in MMORPGs annoy you?

The last few months, I’ve been playing a lot of Diablo III, and last week I jumped into Devilian. One thing both games do that turns out to annoy me?

Cutscenes.

This is not a new problem, of course. Games like classic Guild Wars made heavy use of cinematics and cutscenes to propel the storyline through missions. A lot of you would probably argue that a story-driven MMORPG like Star Wars: The Old Republic is at its best when it’s letting you talk your way through a cutscene!

And really, Diablo III and Devilian are doing the same thing, but I think I had forgotten how much they grate on my nerves when I’ve seen them over and over in a multiplayer game where invariably some people want to watch them and other people just want to get on with the killin’ and lootin’. The worst offender has to be Diablo III’s boss-fight cutaways. Ug!

How about you guys? Do cutscenes in MMORPGs annoy you, or are they one of the RPG holdovers you treasure?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
