Lord of the Rings Online’s Mordor expansion is officially live with a launch trailer

After just a brief delay (but still probably way too soon), Lord of the Rings Online has officially launched its Mordor expansion. I’m sure I owe somebody something for wagering all those years ago that we’d never get to this day, but here we are.

“This expansion allows players the ability to explore the shadowy lands beyond the Black Gate and includes:
Over 300 new quests: Players journey into Mordor and plunge into a new adventure, filled with lost stories, unfamiliar enemies, and the opportunity to fight through the lands around Mount Doom and beyond.
A new allegiance system: Pledge support to one of the factions seeking to reclaim this long-lost piece of Middle-earth. Players will be able to gain bonuses, story and exclusive gear along the way!
Crafting and gear updates: Players are able to customize their Hero with all-new armor, weapons, accessories, and more!
A new race – the High Elf. With the purchase of the Collector’s Edition or the Ultimate Fan Bundle, players will be able to ally with the High Elf.
Extensive landscape updates. Explore the beautiful and terrifying landscape of Gorgoroth to discover hidden treasures and additional rewards.”

You can pick up the expansion on the official site, but maybe take a look at our thoughts on the different tier packages first — you’re looking at at least $40. We’ve tucked our Mordor coverage to date down below along with the launch trailer, which, well… it doesn’t really show the game’s best look. Happy patch day!

Yeah, but Daybreak. Buying this expansion would mean giving them money as publisher.

One thing I will say is that the lighting is much better on the new models. I notice it’s not just the player characters, NPCs seem to have undergone an upgrade as well.

I really want to love LOTRO, but the combat is just sooo slow, way too many actions, the character models are dated, and the UI is in desperate need of an upgrade. Like I said, I would really love to play this game, but it kills me once I start playing.

As for the trailer. Umm, it was getting good up until the combat started, and then the music cut and it was almost like they were making fun of their own game.

This is an awesome trailer. 2002 is shaping up to be a rad gaming year!

I don’t think the trailer is all that bad. It doesn’t look bad if you let it run in the window, at least.
On the other hand, I am a little disappointed that the character model upgrades are pretty subtle and not that dramatic. I wasn’t expecting Black Desert quality, but I was expecting more than the subtle frowns and expressions on the new models being the big difference. All that being said there was a very large crowd around the barber shop in the Pony last night. I wonder what they were thinking too.

“A new race – the High Elf.”
Yeah, buy it extra, lol great expansion deal. I am glad I decided not to pre-purchase this after all.

As for that trailer, well it’s the first time I have seen Daybreak’s name attached to the game, so that’s interesting.
But the trailer is awful. I am a uni student doing film editing, they could have gotten any free internship scrub like myself who would have done a far better job for free with only payment being the chance to throw it on a show-reel.
I mean, you don’t need a budget to understand editing.

That trailer would’ve had me super excited! …. in 2006. I will, however, re-download the game to check out the new models. I was hoping that the revamp would also include the animations, but it appears to be models only… either way, this time i will make a decision whether i continue to play the game or not, as the models were the biggest stopgap for me last several attempts.

Oh but they have… dear Lord, they have. Check out the official forums for the amount of complaints over the new running animations. Seems like this expansion is a bust on all possible fronts.

I think that I have finally decided that I am going to wait till this appears on the store and will buy it with my LP’s when that is an option.

I have other things that I have been looking forward to playing such as the Path of Exile expansion plus I still have other expansions such as Morrowind for ESO that I purchased at launch but still haven’t even looked at yet. Also I still haven’t finished the things I wanted to do with some of my alts in Lotro so still plenty of things to keep me occupied without the expansion.

While I am excited to see what Mordor offers a few more months after waiting all these years is hardly anything. Plus any bugs or issues will hopefully be sorted out by the time I play so I don’t really see a downside for me in waiting.

Hope everyone who does jump in has a complete blast and you all spam One Shots with lots of dark and evil screen shots. :-)

I thought they said they were NOT going to do a major launch trailer a few months back (budget). Ohhh … I get it.

Not a big deal, it’s all about the game for me. Hopefully, they threw the extra artwork budget into the actual content of Mordor. I’m going to go now and tell the orcs to “get off my lawn!”

That trailer really did a disservice to the game. Hope they come out with something better that really shows the high points, if any, of this expansion.

I think that the trailer actually reflected the current game. I’m playing it now and the engine creaks when the wind blows. I’m enjoying it but I don’t think it’s got great appeal to draw in new players.

I think it is an accurate reflection, but I also think it highlights all the weakest things in the game, like the ancient character models, without highlighting its strengths. They didn’t even choose some of the better looking combat animations, IMO. It made me sad.

Also, if that’s you, HAI CROWE!

You guys don’t understand, do you? With such a terrible launch trailer those still errrr… ‘fervent’ enough can’t possibly end up disillusioned. This is pure win. In SSG’s twisted lil’ world that is.

So we have an extremely lackluster feature list, a deterring financial model, the very questionable decision to not include one of the precious few key features to the base expansion pack and now this disappointing trailer as a cherry on top.
What more could they possibly have in store for us?

One of my bigger complaints besides the multiple client crashes “anytime” you’re in Minas Tirith would be removing quests. Read the patch notes, the list of quests that will be removed and that you have to re-pick up his prohibitive for someone like me who plays all classes.

I take long breaks on some of the characters and focus on one or two at a time due to the nature of LotRO and alts. I don’t mind that so much as when I have to figure out that they removed a quest or four. That’s a pain in the ass in a major way.

Edit: Gonna have to strongly agree with Justin’s post below about the lackluster trailer.

Reader
Halla-Zayeron

They weren’t removed, just reset for quest versioning regarding the new race release. Those that had the quest open during the update only had to go back and pick them up again.

Well, they are actually removed from “your” active quests log, which was my point. Lucky though when you first log in it scrolls the quests that removed, which allows me to jot down each one to go back and get.

It’s a pain when you have 16 characters, but as long as you do note down each quest as you log in you can go back and get them again as I mentioned above.

It took a while to dl, even with a 60Mbps connection, but I was able to get right in after the update. I’m kind of surprised there doesn’t seem to be any big issues, even though I know they’ve done quite a few of these.

Mordor isn’t a theme for me until I can buy with points so I’m just happy the game isn’t broken.

Absolutely terrible showcase of their gameplay. I decided to pick this up again after a 5 year absence and I am having an awesome time. I am floored they would decide to show their combat in such low resolution. In reality the combat is fun and doesn’t seem as clunky as it appears in this tragedy of a video.

I am a lifetimer and first time that the Expansion is not available to buy with points :( I guess they will added later. I would buy it, but I also found the prices too high… especially when they dont have lotro points included as they had before.

So I might just unlock High Elf for now and wait until the expansion comes to store :P

Reader
Crowe

$80 to unlock the High Elf. Or wait until winter for both the HE *and* the expansion to go to the store.

Reader
Viktor Budusov

Excuse me? Moria & Mirkwood?

You, lifetimers, have the best deal ever in MMORPG industry. And you dare to whine?! Incredible how people could be greedy. People like you are cancer of Lotro.

Reader
Roger Melly

Hang on a minute people paid money upfront for a lifetime subscription how can they be greedy .

I have heard some daft things in these forums but that one has to rank as one of the daftest .

Reader
Carebear

Now that something new… We saved lotro when it was in dare need… you could also buy a lifetime by then, when the game much needed the money to sustain…although something tells me that someone got mad that missed the lifetime offer.

Ok let me tell you other way… I pay 30 euro for the FFXIV expansion with 10 times more content that lotro and dont pay 80+ in lotro expansion in order to be able to play the expansion new race… simple enough

Reader
Roger Melly

Looking at the FAQ

“Mordor expansion will be available for Store Points after Update 22 this winter. Point prices will be:
Base Edition (includes Mordor Region & Instances only): 2495 Points
High Elf: 1000 Points”

Dunno when update 22 will be out I guess it could be anytime between October and February .

It won’t really impact me as a lifer because I am quite casual about lotro with one level 105 ( who still has a bit of a way to go before he reaches the Black Gates ) . I can’t remember how long it took previous expansions to be available for TP . I have always been a bit behind with them until now .

If my characters have all reached the gates of Mordor prior to it being made available to us for TP I’ll just play something else until it is .

Reader
Carebear

currently I am very casual with lotro too :p my guild stopped “raiding” long ago and we are just a group of casuals playing mostly alts upon alts :P would not impact to me too and I can wait till winter cause I currently play another MMO anyway hehe (and have great fun so far)

Reader
Viktor Budusov

>Now that something new… We saved lotro when it was in dare need

Lolwhat? When this happened?

> when the game much needed the money to sustain…

It’s NOW when the game needs money.

>I pay 30 euro for the FFXIV expansion with 10 times more content that lotro

Oh really? Please tell me what content it has. And don’t forget that Mordor expansion also includes instance cluster and multiboss raid which will be released in following dot patches. Let’s compare!

>and dont pay 80+ in lotro expansion in order to be able to play the expansion new race

Here you’re right. Very bad marketing decision

Reader

back in the day, codemasters decided to leave, leaving Turbine alone with the game. The game went f2p model and back then this model was something new to all of us… there were lot of rumors about the game future and some said that this lifetime might be a last “milking” out of the playerbase, e.t.c.

Yet, despite all these and not knowing if it will worth it or not, we got the lifetime, we payed lot of money by the old standards because we loved the game and wanted to support it… Not even the most optimistic of us knew what a good deal it was… and back then we were not the cancer of the game, we were few brave souls that took the risk to buy the lifetime…

But history aside, what would you do if you had lifetime and 20k+ points sitting in your wallet? Would you pay 80 Dollar/euro for the expansion? (I dont even discuss about the 40 euro version, since it is missing the new race which is a weird decision too)

As of FFXIV I am just honest here… FFXIV have lot of dungeons, trials and raids with the best mechanics in MMOs currently. You cant realistically deny that is superior to lotro…

Reader
Humble DG

I feel the lifetime gave me above and beyond anything I could have expected. Considering the number of hours sank into a game, and having pretty much the ability to play the entire game without restrictions, my lifetime sub has paid for itself triple the value over the years. I don’t think it’s unreasonable, now, to be asked to pay for an xpac that I haven’t been asked since Moria (2008). It is what supports a game and allows them to continue development.

I haven’t given LOTRO a dime in over 5 years. Every update they have put out, I paid Turbine points for that I received from monthly 500 allotment that continues to just grow. I get boosts and inventory expansions for free. I get basically everything for free and take it for granted.

Now, I’m asked to give money for an expansion into the final stage of the story? Yes. I’ll pay them. Absolutely. They’ve done right in my book. No other MMO has given me so much for the money I’ve given. I don’t see how any lifetime subscriber can complain about paying money for an xpac 7 years after the last time they were asked.

Reader
Carebear

I dont argue that lifetime is not a great deal… its almost like we steal from them. I just said that back when we decided to get it, no one believed how good deal it was… even the most optimistics among us… it was a risk back then.

Now I agree to all you said, I got my money back in x3 and more sure. My complain is not that I have to pay for the expansion but the actual pricing of the expansion. If it was a 35-40 Euro/dollar expansion including the High Elf it would be all good. I just think that expansion is ridiculous overpriced, in compare with other MMOs expansions.

EDIT: And also the decision to lock High Elf behind the pricey expansion option is also bad imo. Let me unlock the race without have to buy expansion… I can just level some new alts for example.

Anyway, the truth is that lotro is not my main MMO anymore and if I didnt had lifetime, most probably I wouldnt even bother to play anymore. I played it a lot for sure, like wow. But now other MMO have my attention (and my wallet) :P

Reader
Humble DG

Apologies if I misread your statements. I also feel what I got from them was more than I probably should have received.

The risk was definitely there as well. Who knew what lifetime meant. Considering so many MMOs were coming out, it was hard to believe a person would play the same game for 2-3 years. 10 years later, I’m baffled that I still have the urge to jump into this game.

Unfortunately, I feel the lifetime may have also been a curse at the same time that cut too much profit and may have lead to some things being cut, never developed or upgraded.

Reader
Carebear

No need to apology m8 :P. Well I ll be honest that if I didnt had the Lifetime, most probably I would have stopped playing the game long ago since I would decide to spend my money on other newer games :P

My friend also who got lifetime feel the same too. We play because it is like a cheat for us… we have all conveniences and all good things from store… I think lifetime helped maintain a community that new players would find.

So is true that the game does not profit from lifetime, but on the other hand it has some guaranteed “veterans” in the game that will help new players.

Reader
Roger Melly

I wouldn’t enter into too much discussion with Viktor he does seem to have a very odd perspective about this .

My impression is that he is envious of those with a lifetime subscription .

From what I’ve seen they look alright. It’s not WoW-style overhaul, but I don’t think anyone was expecting that level of work to go into LOTRO’s updates given the games age and popularity/budget. The character models were always a big hurdle for me, the art style for the world is gorgeous but when it came to characters…kinda gross to me.

The update models look like they’re to a point where at the very least they aren’t unappealing to me, so hopefully it will address the issues I had with them and will let me enjoy the rest of the game for what it is : )

Reader
Carebear

With a little patience and a good outfit you can make it likeable enough to play :P My biggest issue is the character movement / animations and not the models, though I welcome the models update!
