LawBreakers officially launches today; here’s the new ‘Skilled AF’ trailer

The Nexon-backed, Cliff Bleszinski-led online shooter LawBreakers is finally live today on both PC (Steam) and PlayStation 4. The game is just shy of 30 bucks, and “all future, non-cosmetic content updates are included at this price,” according to the developers. I’m sure you’ll hold them to that.

“The frenetic shooter brings unprecedented vertical combat, allowing players to deliver fatal blows from every direction utilizing innovative movement systems and combat abilities. Choose between nine dynamic roles, eight gravity-defying maps, and five buzzer-beating game modes in high-intensity multiplayer team-based battles that will challenge even the most skilled FPS player.”

The game’s had an interesting path to here, its devs having gone back to the drawing board once already to retool the game after alpha began last year. Check out the new “Skilled AF” trailer (…) and new images down below, along with a roundup of all our coverage to date!

It looks like they addressed one of my two issues with the game: the speed. Although they went the “other way” with it and it looks even more like an adrenaline-based frag fest instead of a more tactical FPS like I was hoping for. Oh well, I’ll pass. Good luck to those of you who benefited from that change!

It’s a pretty fun fast paced alternative to Overwatch. The cosmetic lockbox stuff directly takes a page from OW but the objectives are more fitting for fast and frantic fighting.

Classes all feel good though you might end up dying a lot early til you find your groove. It’s overall not that reinventive or groundbreaking but it’s pretty much what you’d expect from Cliff B.

I do wonder if it will … get off the ground.

I tried it a lot since early alpha, and it has some very fun mechanics, people who don’t mind a bit of chaotic fragging will love it.

Some characters play really well and others I felt were like wading upriver to get any fun from. And the more recently designed maps play much better.

Personally though I wont be getting it, too happy with Dirty Bomb as the only recent shooter that really works for me. But more choice is always good!

cliffy b is the dev i associate most with the rise of the dude bro gamer. gears of war is so influential and also the essence of dudes like cliff and bands like Creed and Limp Bizkit. i think putting chainsaws on the ends of cool guns is hilarious and rad, but it’s also at the opposite end of the spectrum of huge weapons in Final Fantasy. Both are phallic for totally the same and totally different reasons.

“Skilled AF”. lol.

And I thank him so much for it. Gears of War was the perfect edgy game, at the perfect time for the Xbox 360. Both the franchise and the console helped each-other a lot.

While Gears of War was a big thing and not ironic, it was great times.

You know the game had more than one developer and character/map/weapon/etc designer; right? Regardless of Bleszinki’s previous work which for some will apparently will always limit what he can produce in the future, I think a lot of the character design choices in the game reflect a desire to be inclusive and diverse. It’s notable that you have 9 classes in the game which gender swap depending on whether you’re on the Law or Breaker side of the fight; you have no control over which side you play on. If you want to get good at a class, you will play either sex. None of the character designs are sexy pinups with skimpy outfits. None of the character designs are super macho because they will share the same elements and similar silhouettes with their female counterpart. This designs are all clearly intentional and intended note to alienate anyone. The game is all about the competition.

Also, all of the weapon strike me as reasonably sized.

he’s one of the most talented people in the games industry. all i said was he’s the one i most associate with the dude bro thing. his youth coincides with the music i mentioned and the attitudes of the games which he shaped and epic was more than happy to use him as their poster boy because he embodied that. what i said wasn’t a stretch by any means and it also doesn’t detract from his talent.

gimme a break though. pics of cliffy b with his hat backwards and pics of that limp bizkit singer with his hat backwards…

it’s not some flat earth, tin foil hat crap. it’s a valid comparison.

Yeah Cliffy B is pretty much the frat boy of game developers and pushed the whole “big buff bro dudes kicking ass and being hardcore with all of the metal and gore” gaming trope hard in the 360 days with Gears of War and Unreal Tournament and whatnot. Not to say that’s a bad thing but that’s pretty much what he’s known for.

Lawbreakers is pretty much what you would expect from a team led by him, and it’s pretty fun if you like fast-action shooters with little downtime between the action. It doesn’t really revolutionize anything and mimics Overwatch in a lot of ways, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Hell I’m sure fans of the games under Cliff’s time with Epic Games will enjoy LB a lot because it’s exactly what they would expect from him.
