MMO Week in Review: Superhero shenanigans [April 12, 2015]

Were you too busy gaming this week to pay attention to MMO news? Get caught up every Sunday evening with Massively Overpowered’s Week in Review!

The remaining superhero MMORPGs just had a big week — or perhaps an unsettling week, depending on your point of view. Daybreak’s DC Universe Online announced a cadence shift from quarterly to monthly, while Champions Online was split off from Cryptic North and sent home to Cryptic’s home base in California. Whether these decisions will be good for the games in the long run is anybody’s guess.

Read on for a look at the rest of this week’s top MMO stories from Massively OP.

Skyforge’s beta is surprisingly satisfying - I can safely say that what I got when I first fired up Skyforge was not, in fact, what I had been hoping I would get. At the same time, I can't say that I'm necessarily…

I don’t know what Sunset looks like to PWE. I am not saying CO is there yet, but I know the conversation had entered the ethos

I’m expecting we will be better off. As I said before, I am waiting patiently for their idea of “summer” in CO.

I have no faith in Champions Online at all. That game has been on life support way past it’s time.

BigAngryPlays On the subject of CO, I’m very “please look forward to it” right now.

ogged451 I remember with my short time in DCUO that you could lock the appearance of your costume, and set it to cosmetically look like pieces you own. But I also remember that it took me a bit to figure that out, too.

If only DCUO had a more traditional control and combat style. I don’t “get” how to pull off combos like “four short, one long”, because I’m probably rhythm impaired or something, but the action combat – and the camera control – are turnoffs for me.
Another big issue are the costumes. First I spend time in the character creator and then, after equipping the first item, my costume is all changed and I’m like “dafuq ?”.
Maybe next year the genre will see some light with City of Titans and Valiance Online, but the current offerings are lacking for me.

I’m actually kind of hopeful for both DCUO and Champions. I don’t know why I am with Champs, but I am, and it’s a good feeling, if a cautious optimism. I hope against hope that CO sees some new content, new powersets maybe, and just some general love from Cryptic. I really hope it doesn’t continue its maintenance mode-esque treatment.

Superhero MMOs deserve to stick around as a genre. I miss COH dearly, and I want developers to see that it’s worth making new Superhero (and don’t forget the Supervillains) games.

I wish both games had more support.  Superhero games are such a melting pot of themes, you can have fantasy, scifi, detective, martial arts etc all in one game.  I hope a good developer in the future can take advantage of that.
