The Daily Grind: What’s your biggest ever MMO splurge?

Ever since Trove launched its superhero-themed expansion Heroes, I’ve been hemming and hawing over buying the big mama upgrade package for the Vanguardian and the gobs upon gobs of currency that comes with it. You guys, I want it, but I have such guilt over spending that much dough on a single class and the costume fluff I’d probably buy with the rest of it. For the same stack of cash, I could buy five or ten whole games on Steam.

It’s silly. I’ve paid way more for dumber things; ask me how much I paid to move a bunch of toons across accounts in Star Wars Galaxies back in the day when that kind of cash was far dearer to me. So I should just get it while the fam is still into the game. And yet… I keep stalling.

How about you? What MMO have you splurged on lately, and what’s the biggest MMO splurge you’ve ever made?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

Spent $60 on a APB Reloaded vehicle pack, that came with a set of clothes, and about 5 weapons. Best money I have spent in an MMO.

I paid 75 pounds about 8 or 9 years ago for a lifetime subscription in Lotro when it was on offer for half price during a welcome back week .

Something I have never regretted .

Other than that I have never paid anything beyond a box price for a game release or expansion pack and a monthly subscription fee .

I have better things do with my money than spend it on cosmetic items and I avoid games that I consider pay to win .

I don’t really spend money on MMOs other than box and sub prices. I think I spent like $5 on GW2 once for a box of pets or something. I’ll stubbornly roll a new character before I’ll pay to transfer.
That being said, for some money I spent and never actually made use of, I own FFXIV and ESO with ALL of their expansions on BOTH PC and PS4, I really don’t know why, since I didn’t play enough of either to actually validate that purchase.

Oh wait, I did buy a Plex one time so I could buy my marauder, that I decided that I hated flying because it was slow and dumb. I then proceeded to roll all over the place in a T2 frigate instead, because “Gotta Go Fast!”

$500-$800 each in multiple pay to win mobile MMORPGs. But it wasn’t enough to be top tier in any of them, the real whales who spend thousands always beat me down.

I spent over $1,000 on Trove but that was over numerous years and not at once.

I also spent over $1,000 on Fortnite when it was first in Early Access. Now the entire system in Fortnite changed up to not rely on lock boxes much and so that was pretty much a waste of money. The very best equipment I have now in it was earned free from playing events.

I thought you were talking about one time purchases until I started doing the math on my WoW and GW2 purchases, you’re talking cumulative instead of splurges am I right?

In a two week period I made 3 separate Gem purchases in GW2 Gem Shop, $50 on payday, $35 early in the next week after paying bills, another $50 after an unexpected windfall. Bought a bunch of Mount Licenses until I got the only decent ones, 2 lvl 80 boosts, bag extension slots, converted the rest to gold, probably an Outfit too.

I accidently spent like $90 in The Secret World’s cash shop.

I don’t even know how it happened. I bought somewhere around $90 worth of “Asshole Bucks” — or whatever they call their virtual currency — and then I just said screw it and bought everything in the cash shop I wanted.

Then a few days later I quit the game and never went back…

Not my proudest moment.

Well my biggest splurges have probably not been on MMOs, but I did just last night toss $25 at Zenimax so I could get just enough Crowns to buy that fiery lion mount that I think has run out of time in the store now. I don’t know how the hell their time-limited mounts work or if they ever bother to bring them back, looks like maybe they do in Crown Crates or whatever. So mreh, I like to throw Zenimax money once in awhile even if I don’t play the game itself too much…

Also I guess earlier this year dumped a decent amount of money into Fantasias in FFXIV and got my friend a pack of like 3 or 5 when they were on sale. Also might’ve made a mistake of jumping too wholeheartedly into RIFT Prime before eventually getting bored of it.

I spent $60 to buy 4300 platinum in Warframe when I had a 70% discount code. I was actually planning to split it with my husband, but it turns out that trading costs in-game credits, too, so I ended up keeping the full 4300 for myself. I still have about half of it. I mostly buy warframe/weapon slots and forma packs, but I have splurged on a few cosmetic items.
