Final Fantasy XIV prepares UI backup features while weathering more DDoS attacks

It's hard to stop a train.

There are a lot of different client-side settings that can make jumping between platforms for Final Fantasy XIV somewhat more difficult. You play one way on your computer at home, but then your friend’s computer doesn’t have everything set up the way you like. What do you do? Well, as of the next patch, you take advantage of the upcoming interface backup feature, which allows you to sync up a saved file of your preferences with the server and then download it locally, ensuring that your interface is the same across the board, wherever you play.

On the less-positive side of things, it appears that the game is getting hit by DDoS attacks again, this time at what director and producer Naoki Yoshida calls a heretofore unseen scale. The team is hard at work teaming up with the internet providers and working to mitigate these attacks, but if the game seems a little laggy or you’re having connection difficulties… well, that’s why. It’s ongoing.

“Unseen scale”

Welcome to the internet of things. Everything is connected now, whether it needs to be or not. Unfortunately the security, software support etc are not there. So the IoT makes assembling bots to aid in large scale DDOS attacks a simple thing. (sigh)

Just a thought, this game has been under DDOS attack since storm blood, what gives?

That’s because they’re trying to blame every network issue on DDoS attacks ;-) Notice how no one has ever claimed responsibility for these (I mean no known/unknown group of people who like to do these kind of attacks) and notice how no other major company is being targeted by these at the present time.

Maybe it’s not a directed attack but the influence of thousands of RMT bot programs.

That is more likely. I logged in a few days ago (after taking a long break) and first thing I see at Limsa Lominsa is the bots advertising Gil sale at some website…

I still don’t understand why can’t SE just hire more in-game support personnel specifically to instantly ban the Gil selling bots or the bots which farm that Gil – the farming bots are still in game and very easy to spot because they don’t bother hiding when they instantly teleport to/from certain locations without using Aethernet or teleport inside the cliffs/mountains and attack mobs from there.

not every network problem was blamed because of DDoS, the only times they did was at the start of sb and currently, inbetweem there wasn’t any blame towards DDoS, and anyway, DDoS are a very common occurence on internet

also, not every DDoS does what they do for fame, some just do it for get money, in short, the DDoSers might be trying to exort SE to pay up so they stop attacking for example, and leaving all this behind the scenes
