SWTOR gives a skimpy roadmap while Star Wars Galaxies is remembered… in song form

It’s a two-for-one Star Wars special in this post today! A short post on the Star Wars: The Old Republic forums shed a very dim light on plans that BioWare has for the MMORPG in the near future.

The next steps contain bug fixes for Patch 5.10.1, a look next month at Patch 5.10.2’s feature set, and a SW Celebration Cantina in Chicago that will contain “more news from us on what is coming this year.” So while it’s more than nothing, it’s certainly less than the meaty reveals that SWTOR fans have hoped to see. Perhaps BioWare has its attention turned elsewhere these days?

But if you still carry a torch for the long-departed Star Wars Galaxies, creator Raph Koster has a suggestion for your viewing hours. He pointed fans toward Porter Robinson’s EDM album that was inspired partly by the MMO and its sunset. You can check that music out as well as its artist streaming and talking about the game after the break.

So, “Maintenance Mode” effectively confirmed. Not surprised.

Star Wars Galaxies shut down!!!!! WTF???? Oh yea right ssshhhhh

I got a realization of how bad my addiction to SWG:L is last night. Yep serves were down for a little bit last night, only a couple hours or less, seemed like forever.

It’s why i always have two games on the go for such occasions. However that doesn’t work when you’re playing such a amazing deep mmorpg.

Well i can play Warframe… meh; cpuold play Fallout 76… meh, you can get caught up on your SWG research you haven’t had much time for since you’re playing the crap out of it, you know stuff about systems, crafting, hit the forums…

OK!

After this Anthem launch, I can see BioWare trying to shift to mobile development now, if they want to survive at all.

Dragon Age. Even if the next one they make is garbage, it’ll sell phenomenally.

I doubt EA shuts down Bioware, there are so uninformed people out there that still think it’s the same studio that made KOTOR and Mass Effect so they will buy anything under their name.

Doesnt really feel like a road map to be honest

The saddest little roadmap there ever was…but at least it’s something. *grumbles about SWL’s silence*

At this point, it’s sure looking like my hopes that BW Austin getting the staff back that were pulled to work on Anthem are dimming rapidly. And now I’m questioning whether all this happened (staff moved off with the promise they’d come back) or if I just made it up in my head -_-

Welp, back to ESO and GW2 for now. Hopefully we’ll hear about this supposed upcoming SWTOR expansion…sometime this year.

*chuckles anout grumbling* They were saying some things, but this Stonehendge mode? Not impressed.

We might, but… They are keeping SWTOR alive enough, but I do not think they are pulling anyone back from Anthem.

Wow. It is Feb, almost March and that is what they have communicated to look forward toward this year? The game and devs seem to be just a shell of their former selves.

It is sad. Truly sad. I love that game. But let’s drop all pretenses. Bioware may be done this year. And SWTOR is already sustaining mode.

This is no surprise at all. It’s like they’re ashamed to even admit SWTOR still exists, much less fix the multitude of bugs they add with such tiny trickles of content. It still boggles the mind how badly managed this game has been. Even with the engine issues and some rocky times early on, it’s not a bad game at it’s core, even if the actual game mechanics are heavily derivative.

Me getting 7 characters to cap (when it was 55, I only got 2 to 60 and none past that) was a testament to how much I enjoyed it, flaws and all. Normally I get too bored to get more than a couple to cap.

It isn’t a surprise at this point but think about this. At one point, 2014 or so, FFXIV and SWTOR were competing, head to head. FFXIV had huge success after its miraculous comeback and SWTOR found it’s footing making more than 200 mil a year. SWTOR Cantinas were in full swing visiting major cities and all the trade shows. FFXIV being a part of SE was doing their version of that as well.

Compare those years to this year. FFXIV has a huge event in Paris, announces all sorts of new content including an Xpac, new classes, tie in with Nier, and a complete roadmap for the year to come. SWTOR? One half-assed paragraph, not even a page long.

Sad and pathetic. Seriously, as someone who, like you, went through the ups and downs and watched SWTOR succeed and become an MMO worth playing, it sickens me to see it ebb away as if it was nothing.

just to compare to the cantina thing XIV Fan Fest in japan next month is estimated to have around 14,000 attendees. What might have been eh?

“…like they’re ashamed to even admit SWTOR still exists…”

This. Very good description of the sense whole situation gives me. Like they’d rather not have SWTOR at all.

I’ve never really seen it happen to this degree, but Bioware has really lost their edge. I guess it’s just like any other creative endeavor, Jefferson Airplane becomes Jefferson Starship.

Yeah but Bioware hasn’t had the “We Built This City” moment with SWTOR.

It hasn’t been BioWare in a good long time. We have seen it time and again when the corporate publishers buy out the dev companies to bleed them dry. BioWare drew its last breath when the good Founding Doctors left to go brew beer for a hobby.

Seems like it was earlier than that. But yeah, that was the last gasp for sure.

“so anthem is not exactly the next mass effect soooo…” *dev jumps out of moving car and combat rolls into the sunset*
