One Shots: Showing up to play hard

It’s always a great feeling when you know you’re not alone when facing great challenges in your life — or in your video games. That world boss might look intimidating, but it doesn’t stand a chance when you show up in Blade and Soul with your four best friends and their elite battle skills.

“You can’t always get what you want, but if you try sometimes, well, you might find…you get what you need,” said Utakata.

Last week’s screenshot challenge was to take pics of weird or amusing things that NPCs say in online games, and IronSalamander8 went straight to Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville for many of them.

“You want characters saying silly things? That’s easy! BfN is chock full of them!” Iron said. See, I always thought zombies could only say “brainssss.” What did I know?

Minimalistway took a pilgrimage to an Orc philosopher in World of Warcraft to see what wisdom he might impart to all of us during this trying time. I think we’ve all been there at one point in our lives, no?

If there’s ever a character from Secret World Legends that made it out alive and is still rollin’, it has to be the gruff savant Edgar and his tricked-out school bus.

“Here’s a lesson in quantum mechanics, Edgar-style,” Sleepy posted.

“When playing through Guild Wars 2: Path of Fire I can’t help but think of the song Darude ‘Sandstorm,'” said Little Bugbear.

Honestly, I try not to think of Sandstorm. It’s… not that good of a techno song. It’s really not.

Let’s do an easy screenshot challenge today! Share a picture of a warm or cozy setting or time of day in an MMO. What makes you want to curl up in that place and stay a while?

Every week, One Shots shines a spotlight on the best community screenshots from your MMO adventures. If you have a great pic to share, email it to justin@massivelyop.com with the subject “One Shots.” Make sure that the picture is over 880px wide and comes with a description or story!

BDO has some pretty calming vistas and views to enjoy along the way that often stops me in mid-adventure to take pictures.

BDO also has some less-than-calming views.

All these shots are from our recent adventures on the summer season servers. These may be the best thing they’ve done for the game. They really allow you to experience the revamped story. We only hit a roadblock at Star’s End (which is a very high AP requirement zone).

That last shot of the dragon rising from the smoke is very nice.

It doesn’t matter the MMO, I’m attracted to the brilliant, warm hues that happen in the early stages of a sunset, such as from this scene in Limsa Lomisa, FFXIV.

Nothing warmer or cozier than the beach right?

Sit by the cosy fire, stare off into the unknowable depths of Agartha, and try to forgive Funcom for turning it into a shopping mall.

PS: Thank you again, Mr. Justin for allowing my contribution from last week to make front page! /bows

…but one clarification, those lyrics where a reference to the Stones’, You Can’t Always Get What You Want, in case anyone didn’t get that. O.o

I was just talking about Darude’s Sandstorm with a coworker the other day. The problem is that it was every flipping where. It got played on the rock stations because it was that awkward time in the growth of techno, it was played in the club, it was played at the raves, it was on MTV’s Amp, it was on every DJ mix album to come out that year, and when I thought it was finally gone, it necromanced itself onto the jock jams playlist and still taunts me every time the wife watches some kind of sport on TV. And now Youtube keeps trying to recommend it to me because I watch a bunch of other 90s techno videos. It’s immortal and finds new ways to haunt me every year and I hates it.

Ya, it played at the skating rink and bowling alley all the time when I was a kid. I think it may be the future rickroll now that I think about it.

When I want to take a moment and basically do nothing, my favorite pastime is to explore the land. Nothing better than a druid for this job.
