The Daily Grind: What’s the best ‘affordable’ MMO?

We’re fast approaching the end of 2020, which means we’ll be cranking up our end-of-the-year machine with some of our recurring pieces. One of those is our piece on MMOs with the most value, and let me tell you, that is one of the most contentious pieces we do because figuring out the value equation is so subjective.

I was thinking about this problem last month after reading a Guild Wars 2 Reddit thread that unapologetically thanked ArenaNet for making the game “affordable,” and I really liked the take. Affordability might even be a more useful measure than value or whether the game is pay-to-win. The trick is figuring out what you’re getting for your money and your measure of comfort in the game if you aren’t shelling out. I know Guild Wars 2 would make my short list because it’s one of the MMOs I turn to for value when it comes to my kids: It’s a really solid MMORPG without too many money shenanigans, and it’s really cheap to let them play.

What would you say is the best “affordable” MMO?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
