The Daily Grind: How long do you trial a new MMO class before deciding whether it’s for you?

I’ve been playing City of Alts… er, City of Heroes lately, and it’s inspired today’s Daily Grind. See, I like to maintain a list of “active” characters in CoH, usually somewhere around 20 toons. That’s my sweet spot for remembering rotations and maximizing rested experience. But this is also a game where I am rolling new characters often, which means most characters get trialed, found wanting, and end up in the discard pile.

So there’s the question: How long does that process take? Based on my spreadsheet, a large portion of my new characters are decommissioned around level 10 or 15, with the rest mothballed around level 20 or 25. This is an unscientific review, but I think the ones I bail on early are down to not liking the aesthetics of the character, while the ones that at least make it into the 20s usually fall off because the rotations and skills aren’t making me happy and I don’t enjoy it enough to soldier on for the late-bloomer powersets.

Obviously, this is going to be different for different MMOs. I don’t often bail on a Guild Wars 2 character until after making it to 80 and diving into at least one elite spec, for example, but it’s much faster to level in GW2. How long do you trial a new MMO class before deciding whether it’s for you?
