The Daily Grind: Is gliding a good compromise to flying in MMOs?

By now, we all know the pros and cons of inserting flying into MMORPGs. Such systems can offer unparalleled freedom and be a great chase reward, but they can also trivialize too much of the world’s difficulty and pull players out of immersion.

But looking at games like Guild Wars 2 and Palia that offer gliding, I’m wondering if this right here might be the best compromise between outright flying and not having any ability to coast down from heights. In all of the heated discussion over flying, I don’t recall too many people talking about or hating on gliding as an alternative.

What do you think about gliding? Is it a good compromise to flight? Is it something that most MMOs, especially ones with many vertical spaces, should offer?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
