It’s time once again for CIG to set its cash registers ringing, draw in new players, and otherwise give everyone playing Star Citizen a chance to try out some existing and all-new vehicles. It’s Invictus Launch Week, which is another one of the sandbox’s annual events that let players try the alpha for free for a limited time.

Hopping into the game is precisely the same as prior years, with interested players needing to only create an account and download the title. This year’s event will be housed at the Bevic Convention Center in ArcCorp, with its show floor showcasing several vehicles from Origin, RSI, Consolidated Outland, and Argo until May 19th; new craft on display include the previously previewed Ursa Medivac and the cargo box-moving MPUV Tractor.

As referenced earlier, the event is also a major cash sales driver, and this year’s event is certainly no exception, with multiple ships available for purchase, real-world merchandise, in-game cosmetic items, and starter packs offered on discount for those who want to begin their journey into the ever-alpha. The event will run between now and May 29th; more details including manufacturer showcase dates are on the event’s site.

Longtime MMORPG gamers will know that Star Citizen was originally Kickstarted for over $2M back in 2012 with a planned launch for 2014. As of 2024, it still lingers in an incomplete but playable alpha, having raised over $650M from gamers over years of continuing crowdfunding and sales of in-game ships and other assets. It is currently the highest-crowdfunded video game ever and has endured both indefatigable loyalty from advocates and immense skepticism from critics. A co-developed single-player title, Squadron 42, has also been repeatedly delayed.
