This week’s content release for DC Universe Online would normally be a nice thing to point out since, you know, it’s adding new gameplay content. Instead, most of the conversations springing up among members of the MMO’s community revolve around Dimensional Ink’s decision to add a currency tab in the cash shop, which lets players buy a wide assortment of in-game coins.
This new episode lets players spend money on various currencies including source marks, tarot cards, and the coney coins that are specific to the current episode, which is baffling some players since the items purchased with these coins can very quickly go stale as new episodic updates hit. And that’s not even considering the prices of some of these currency bundles: One of the larger bundles costs over $200.
This addition to the game has ignited a firestorm of anger among players, with several furious forum threads that agitate against the currency marketplace tab and the MMO’s overall monetization, deep disappointment on Twitter, and the previously referenced analysis and anger on Reddit.
Of course the new episode has done more than add a fresh cash shop offering, as it launches a new story involving Harley Quinn, Apokolips, and the Furies, as well as a new open world map, a new raid, a new solo mission, and a new alert. The problem is that what most players are talking about is the currency shop.
