The Daily Grind: What one simple fix would help your favorite MMORPG?

In the comments of the 490th MOP Podcast, multiple people chimed in to talk about Guild Wars 2’s Heart of Thorns expansion after I said I have been very, very slowly working through what I consider to be the most challenging map in the game: Tangled Depths. As I type this, I’m down to one hero point left to claim to finish mapping it out, and it’s two grindy mastery levels away. And I do love that it’s challenging for explorers, mind you; we need more MMOs that take exploration seriously! But I think there are some simple fixes that would make it less frustrating, at least for me as I go through it.

“If I were going to fix it, I’d do two things: Swap the champs on mastery/hero points to elites, and reduce some of the mastery progression blocks on map progression,” I argued. “They made more sense at launch when lots of people were playing there and players were expected to spend months grinding away.” Neither of these would take much work, and it’d actually allow more casuals and explorers to actually access and finish the content, without actually making the exploration itself easier. I’d call it a win/win.

So that’s what I want to talk about in today’s Daily Grind – simple fixes with big impacts that could really improve your MMORPG of choice. What one simple fix would help your favorite MMORPG?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
