I certainly did not have to twist readers’ arms to get them to bring out a mountain of MMORPG character selfies set against interesting backdrops. Of course, everyone had their own definition of what that should mean…
“When it comes to character selfies the backdrop becomes less important if there is an important lore character in your picture,” said Ryuen. “Case in point: My humble Monk managed to snare Firiona Vie herself in EverQuest II for a quick pic before she had to attend to more pressing matters.”
She had more box art modeling to do. It’s exhausting, being one of the last of the Midriff Elves in the game.
And if you can fly, the entire world can be your backdrop! Just make sure to keep the planet from spinning too fast underneath you.
“The city of Metropolis in the morning is a good selfie backdrop, I think,” submitted Mysecretid. “It also helps when your character is a protege of Superman in DC Universe Online, so you can get Jimmy Olsen to take the picture while you pose.”
Jimmy Olsen better not have a fear of heights. Or falling. Or strange men in spandex.
Rafael took us to Selfie School with this Blade and Soul pic: “Selfies? Hmm. There are three types, IMO. The ‘look where I am’ type. Then there is the ‘look who I’m with!’ And finally the ‘it’s all about be.’ selfie. And of course, the backdrops have everything to do with the types. See if you can guess which type this is.”
Looking for the advanced class? It’s taught by Professor Hikari down the hall.
Here’s a preview: “If you’re going to do a true selfie, then it needs to look like a selfie taken by a handheld device. This works pretty well in modern games like Secret World Legends. Then you just need a good shot of your character with some dramatic, funny or unlikely background.”
One graduate of this school is Vincent, whose doctoral thesis was this Final Fantasy XIV picture. Simply masterful!
“Sunny sky and a beach — a perfect combination,” he says.
Inspired by our headlining picture today, this week’s screenshot challenge will be to take a picture of a “famous” NPC or character in your MMO. Tell us a little about when you first saw them in game — did you geek out at all?
