I know, this is a hard question for someone who loves alts – including me. But it’s relevant because of Embers Adrift’s inbound hybrid B2P transition: One option to play the game includes buying the box and skipping the sub, which entitles you to play one chosen character on the account. (Subbing unlocks the rest.)
Embers Adrift is far from the only game to do something similar to this; games like Lord of the Rings Online and City of Heroes famously limited characters for F2P accounts, while MMOs like Star Wars Galaxies initially allowed just one character per server, and Albion Online allows only three – with a separate subscription for each to make them properly functional. This is not unheard of in our genre, in spite of all the other games that hand out character slots like candy.
Should MMOs limit how many characters we can roll? How annoyed are you by MMOs that limit characters, either for in-game economic reasons or for out-of-game economic reasons?
